The Waikiki Beachboys won the Hawaiian League Championship last night as Yonder Alonso went 0-2 with 2 walks and Todd Frazier went 0-3 with a HBP. The Reds hitters seemed to be in the middle of their championship run as Alonso would hit .308/.419/.510 and Frazier hit .295/.375/.547 as just two of the 5 players in the league with an OPS over .900. Reds relief prospect Philippe Valiquette had a rough time in Haawaii though as he walked 10 batters, struck out 11 and had an ERA of 8.53.

The HWL is over, so those stats are going to remain the same. The Arizona Fall League also ends this week. The other leagues will be going for a while though and you may see a few more guys showing up in the other winter leagues as the season goes along.

  1. why hasnt neftali soto been playing?

    Doug Gray Reply:

probably because he has to be the youngest guy in the league. He has to pay his dues so to speak.

i was wondering the same thing, i wonder what position they have him at

  3. Do you have any winter stats of the reds’ newly signed Ben Davis?

    Doug Gray Reply:

As of right now it appears he hasn’t played any winter ball.

  4. The whole Ben Davis thing caught me off guard. Does anybody know what kind of stuff he has? Im guessing he will be getting to know Jerry Gil pretty well in Sarasota.
Im getting the impression that Chris Heisey will be ready for AAA well before there is room for him there. He is the reason that I would trade Drew Stubbs before Todd Frazier.

Any ideas as to why some of the arms that pitched so well this summer had some real rough outings? Fisher, Adkins and Viola took a beating. Working on things? Manuel still solid though.

    Doug Gray Reply:

Working on things and probably a little tired. Its a long season and these guys have been pitching since February.

  6. Did the Reds get any picks for Affeldt signing with San Fran?

    wanderinredsfan Reply:

They get a sandwich pick next june. If Weathers signs elsewhere, then the Reds get another.
Not sure where they fall relative to each other and other teams picks though. Does anyone have any insight? Will they be back-to-back based on the Reds earlier position?

The Reds will get a sandwich pick between the first and second round.

    wanderinredsfan Reply:

But where would the picks of Affeldt and Weathers fall during the compensation round? Will it be based on the team’s slot based on previous rounds; somewhere around the 8th pick in the compensation round? And, Will Affeldt’s compensation pick be higher due to his better Elias ranking?

    Kyle Reply:

Im not dead certain, but I think that the compensation would be based on their rankings. We wont have any idea about which exact pick they get until everybody signs, which won’t be for a while.

    Doug Gray Reply:

I am pretty sure this is right also.

Project Prospect just ranked the top 1st base prospects, and Alonso came in 4th, behind both Smoak (2nd) and Hosmer (3rd). Lars Anderson was number 1; rightly so IMO.
Any opinions on this? I would hope that Alonso is a better prospect than Smoak, considering we took him a few picks earlier. And given Hosmer is a few more years away, I would have put Alonso as the number 2.

    Doug Gray Reply:

I help with a lot of the rankings over there and do some guest writing every now and again for Adam and Adam. I didn’t help with this list, but did work on the upcoming Top 1B under 30. That said, me and Adam Foster generally are pretty close with our thinking on prospects. I know what he uses to rank his guys and I think he is probably giving a little too much credit to Smoak. I would probably say Hosmer is ahead of both in terms of upside, although he is a bit further away than either. I see Alonso as a .300/.400/.525-.550 type of hitter, where as I see Smoak as a .280/.360/.550-575 type of hitter. I guess its all about a preference with those two. In reality though they are all pretty close.

    Doug,
How would you rank Frazier and Francisco of all the third base prospects in baseball? I’d have to believe that they are in the top 15 in all of baseball.

@Wander… You’re spot on - the higher Elias rating gets the earlier sandwich pick. The Reds still have to offer Affeldt arbitration, though… LOL.

    coltholt Reply:

hasn’t that already happened? you can’t offer arbitration to a player who has already signed somewhere else…otherwise why not offer everyone arbitration? in this case…they are crazy if they didn’t…they are crazy that they let him go…they should have at least matched that offer…our bullpen looks to take a huge backslide in 2009

    Doug Gray Reply:

I wouldn’t say it was crazy to let him go. This was the first year in his career that Affeldt posted an xFIP under 4.25. Now it may be due to his increased use of his change up, or maybe its just an outlier to his career.

    Patrick Brame Reply:

The Reds do not have to offer arbitration. You only have to offer arbitration if a player is unsigned by the arbitration deadline Dec 2. Because if you do not offer you give up your rights to that player including compensation.
