Pensacola lost 5-3. Box Score
- Ryan LaMarre went 3-3 with a double, walk, 2 RBI and a run.
- Joel Guzman went 1-3 with a walk and a double.
- Cody Puckett went 1-4 with a run.
- Yordanys Perez went 1-4 with a run.
- Daniel Corcino allowed 2 earned in 6 innings with a walk and 7 strikeouts.
- Chris Manno threw a perfect inning of relief with a strikeout.
Game notes
Daniel Corcino was at 89 pitches through 6 innings and was sent out for the 7th. He walked the first batter and was then pulled. Clayton Tanner came on and wasn’t able to record an out, giving up a run for Corcino and 2 of his own before giving way to Drew Hayes. That 7th inning was crazy. Three wild pitches led to four runs scored in the inning. Yes, the final wild pitch of the inning scored TWO runs. Not sure I have ever seen that before. Drew Hayes was responsible for two of the wild pitches, though the first one could have easily been called a passed ball. The second one was a breaking ball in the first that Koyie Hill took his time getting to. He lightly jogged to the ball, which led to the second run scoring on the play. Henry Rodriguez had the day off, so his hit streak remains in tact.

I haven’t seen anything official in any transactions but according to the MLB top 20 prospects for the Reds YRod is listed back at Billings. I was thinking a demotion to Dayton was in order but maybe Billings might be better for him as a possible confidence builder if he rips up the league from June to Sept.
Opps just saw it was listed on May 8th in Bakersfield tranactions
Since Billings doesn’t begin for another month this was just a technical assignment since he has to appear on someones roster or b released. He has just been sent back to Arizona to extended Spring Training.
After watching his performance in Dayton last year I’m not sure it would be a confidence builder.
After watching Tuttles field and dugout demeanor in Dayton, then last nights ejection over balls and strikes, I’m not sure he has matured much from his 50-game suspension.
For the Dragons that is two ejections in two days over balls and strikes.
For the Dragons that is two ejections in two days over balls and strikes.
Losing will do that to you.
I didn’t say going back to Dayton, I said going back to Billings could be a confidence builder because Dayton is in a pitchers league which may not help much. Anyway I aready assumed he was sent Arizona for extended spring training. It still remains to be seen whether he is sent to Dayton or Billings after extended spring unless there is some insight I’m not aware of out there.
Pretty solid outing from Villareal. I wonder if we go a couple months before we ever need a swing starter if maybe he gets the call over Francis or Tomko. I do think he should stay there regardless. When Brackman comes back, move him to the pen and see if he can have control for one inning at a time.
After a terrible first few outings, Nick Christiani is starting to settle down and has thrown a lot of scoreless innings lately.
Lamarre is really heating up, now at .285/.373/.400 on the year. Would like to see more power, but his power is up from last year. More surprising is he is only on pace for about 28 steals after taking 55 bags last year. He is also striking out a bit much with 32 in 34 games, but he does bring a strong walk rate with that.
It’s real nice to see Corcino missing some bats and limiting his walks again. Would have had 0 walks had he not come out for the 7th, but at 89 pitches, I understand why they let him. Hopefully this is him starting to make his adjustments to AA and we’ll see more starts like this.
Next years AAA rotation could very well be a polar opposite of the kind of rotation we saw to start this year. Whereas this year we had Tomko/Francis/Gallagher/Brackman/Reinke rotation of mostly retreads, next year could have a possibility of being Corcino/Villareal/Sulburan/Lotzkar/Cingrani, albeit it wouldn’t shock me if Lotzkar and Cingrani start in AA given that we they wouldn’t have had a full season in AA and that would really be stacking your depth at that level.
Hamilton getting back in the swing of things now a few games back into coming back from bereavement leave. Given that he had played every game before that, a few games off may not have been the worst thing for his body over this season.
Bryson Smith is starting to rack up impressive games as well, especially for a guy that skipped Low A as not a top pick from last years draft. With the Reds outfield situation as it is, he could get a shot in the next couple of years.
Hopefully Barnhart can keep up this hot streak and keep hitting at a respectable level. We may need him backing up Mesoraco in a couple years when Hanigan’s contract runs out. We know he has the D, but even backup catchers have do something with the bat.
Rhinehart looked good to me last season in the few games I saw. He seemed to hit a wall early when he moved up to AAA and now it looks like he may be taking off somewhat with the bat. Time will tell if it continues.
doug after a month and a half what are your thoughts about mesoraco
Not enough playing time. Hard to figure much out when he starts 2-3 times a week and hardly ever back to back.
It’s bad enough only 2-3 times a weed but never getting a couple of games back to back to get in some kind of grove….
Amazing that I have said the same thing about Heisey who has spent over 2 years with the club and hasn’t ever been able to see more than 2-3 starts per week, and yet everyone here has long since written him off.
To be fair, Heisey was never seen as a full-time player, much less an All-Star level player by anyone outside of maybe his own family. He has been viewed as a fringe starter by some and a good 4th outfielder by most. Heisey is a high strikeout, low walk with power kind of guy who plays good defense on the corners and average at best defense in center. Plenty of value there, but probably not a starter.
Couple of more names for the June draft that could fall to the Reds. Victor Roache college outfilder with power. The other is Corey Seager a High school 3rd base with power potential.
Draft guys I like:
Bats:
Richie Shaffer, 3B, Clemson
Courtney Hawkins, OF, TX HS
Albert Almora, OF, HS
Joey Gallo, 3B/1B/LF, HS
Arms:
Luc Giolito, RHP, CA HS
Marcus Stroman, RHP, Duke
Max Fried, LHP, CA HS
Andrew Heaney, LHP, Oklahoma State
With guys like Buxton, Zunino, Correa, Appell, Gausman all in pretty much everone’s top 10 odds are one of these guys is available at 14.
Add Zimmer to that list of guys that WILL be drafted before the Reds go. Plus, it seems right now that Fried will not make it either. As for Giolito, I don’t think he’ll sign at 14. I would think he’ll go to UCLA and shoot for the number one spot in three years.
After hearing what Kevin Goldstein(Baseball Prospectus) had to say about this year’s college position players, I kind of hope we don’t go after one. In his words:
“This draft is the worst crop of college position players I’ve seen in my 20+ years of doing this”
BBA has their first Mock Draft out and they have us taking Michael Wacha RHP out of Texas A&M. In their mid season Top 60 draft prospect list, Macha was rated their #7 over all player and a sleeper pick to go #1 over all. He was #23 over all in February so his performance in March is what propelled him up a lot. Here was their scouting report on him in Feb:
After throwing 130 innings in the spring and leading Texas A&M to the College World Series, Wacha still had enough left in the tank to allow just one earned run in two starts for Team USA. He relies on his changeup and his command, both of which were as good as anyone’s on the national team. Wacha uses his 6-foot-6, 195-pound frame to throw his pitches on a steep downhill plane. His straight changeup is more notable for its deception than its action, and he sets it up by locating his 90-93 mph fastball. His ultimate ceiling depends on whether he can come up with a solid breaking ball, and he made progress with a cutter/slider this summer.
Guys heading to Arizona tomorrow and actually will be in Louisville for a few games . I watched the Pensacola game from my office yesterday noon time. A couple of things Corcino looked good, and deserved the win but forget that it was a quality start. Hayes threw well I thought and then the last batter just seem to loose the zone. Manno looks very good , it seems that he is throwing a slider this time out, i have to be critical for a moment.. Hill the catcher is a big league guy, who really looks lost behind the plate. Lets just use the excuse that he is getting use to the staff, but i must tell you the last 3 games, he has had a tuff time . He is regarded as a quality defensive catcher, so we need to give him a pass.
Doug,
I would like to say that I love your website, and I follow you on twitter. Been coming to the website for over 5 years and it only keeps gettting better. Do not ever comment on here, but have a question for you?
Does Bailey still have a splitter that he was using for his out pitch? I have not seen it used this year at all. Just curious, since he was 0-2 a lot the other day but could not put anyone away.
Yes he does, but he is only throwing it about 9-10% of the time. His put away pitch he usually goes to is his slider or his fastball.
HRod on the DL with a broken thumb
David Vidal to AA?
They’ll probably just play Puckett at 3B
one thing to add on Bailey, the splitter is stressful on the arm, and guys like Baily have said in the past that it does sometimes bother his arm
The slider is rough on the arm also(probably less so than the splitter).
Puckett at 3B tonight for the Wahoos. Fellhauer at clean-up!
