Doug:
As draft picks sign, can we get an idea of where you would place them in the prospect rankings? I saw Keith Law would place Rahier #5 and Trevieso #6.
Tomorrow I will be bringing out an updated ‘Mid Season Top 10′ list that will include draft picks (I am assuming we will sign our top guys).
From mlbtraderumors.com
•The Reds have signed 18th round pick Jackson Stephens for $100K, reports Callis (on Twitter). The high school right-hander and third baseman hails from Alabama.
Doug, don’t know if your watching the Reds telecast tonight but I got to tell you I am getting more and more impressed with Frazier. I have to ask did he show this kind of power to all fields in Minor leagues. He is showing he can use whole field on ML level.I still hold by breadth on his throws to Joey but he is really raising his game at this level. Has got his bat on some very good fastballs this series.
Frazier has shown a ton of power to center and moderate opposite field power in the minors.
Doug, playing 81 games in GABP may upgrade that opposite field power a tad. He’s already won us one game by homering to RF. Really like his approach. As I said before just from a limited eyeball test he doesn’t seem like the game is to big for him.
I have been saying that about Frazier. I am going to be a disappointed fan if Frazier is sat down for Rolen when he comes back. I also like Cozart, Heisey and especially what Mesoraco has been doing as of late. I believe in playing your way on the field.
Again, the only trade we need to make is for a left handed platoon/bench hitter. Someone like Laynce Nix. For all the great hitting last night, the pen was awful. It happens! Hopefully, everyone is on the same positive page Tuesday.
Mez has 2 hits tonight and has more RBI’s than Hannigan. Who starts the next game? Also, what a throw he made to second!
Cueto is pitching. So Hanigan will be starting but Mez is got to be giving them something to think about.
Just now getting a chance to reply but going back to Hanigan being trade bait. I think he expendable and he would certainly have value. We have a nice backup plan(s) down in AAA. I also think Arrendondo(should he cut down on BB’s)will have trade value, and he may be expendable if we get Masset and or Bray back. Not to mention D.Joseph is in AAA now.
Doug I love what the wahoos bullpen is doing the past 10 games looks like guys are stepping up
So it is unlike the Reds pen?
Doug,
I know a lot of people think that Billy may get promoted at the half season – but if he did what position would he play? So decent players at Double A at short or center (if they wanted to move him)
I can’t imagine Hamilton being promoted if Gregorius isn’t also being promoted. So if Hamilton is moving up, I would expect Gregorius to also be moving up to clear shortstop for both guys.
Weekend thoughts:
D’Anna seems to be coming around after almost a year off.
Kind of fun watching UCLA play with their 2/3 Reds outfield and a Valaika brother playing shortstop.
Have have been really disappointed by the lack of baseball instincts of Sean Buckley. I guess being around it his whole life I thought he would have more. At times defensively he just looks lost on the field.
The trading of Grandal and the retirement of Coddington has really turned a deep catching corps into an average one at best. Two of the guys at AAA could help in a pinch but then there is a derth until Barnhart at High A who is OK defensivaly byt struggling big time with the bat.at
tell me baker didnt lose the game last night and i will call you a liar
Tell us what Baker should have done?
Dusty can’t pitch for the bullpen. A complete failure by the pen lost the game last night. They didn’t come close to performing to their abilities. Not one of the relievers did their jobs. I got to watch the game last night as it was on ESPN.
Alan, absolutely. Two days in a row Marshall had a chance to get Fielder out a guy who he has owned and failed. Ondrusek came in and got the last out. I guess he could have brought Chapman in to strat the 8th instead of Ondrusek but with RH’s coming up why? He used Ondrusek who got lit up. Chapman comes in to face the Lefty and does what. Four guys had a shot to get the job done and none got it done.
Who actually decides who comes in from the pen ?? I thought it was managed poorly last night…
Terry what should Dusty have done.
Need to take my comment back. I was fliping the channel all night and didn’t know that HB had thrown that many pitches. I should have all the facts before I type. That said who does make the decisions on who comes in from the bullpen??
Terry, ultimately Dusty makes the decision but a lot goes into it.Who pitched recently and how much. The situation, who he is facing, schedule many factors. I’m sure Price has imput but in the end its Dusty. In last nights game The four main guys all failed to do the job. Can’t find fault with how Dusty has used the pen Lastnight or actually the whole season.Pen imploded. It happens.
Lets examine the moves Dusty made.
1.Removed Bailey at 112 pitches with runners on after 6 2/3 innings with Cabrera coming up.
2. Brought in Arrendondo to face Cabrera who he promtly walked so Dusty brings in Marshall who until the Saturday game owned Fielder. How was that a mistake? Marshall promptly gives up a hit.
3. He then brings in Ondrusek to face the right hander who gets the third out and still has a 3 run lead.
4. Starting the 8th he uses Ondrusek who gives up walks and hits and then he brings in Chapman who hits and walks a batter and gives up hits. Now what should he have done. Could he have went to Chapman in the beginning of the 8th instead of Ondrusek? Could he have went to Simon? My point is using ondrusek was not a bad move in the 8th.
5. Execution killed the reds last night. Marshall,Ondrusek and Chapamn all failed to get the job done. It happens hasn’t happened often but it did last night.
I wont’ say it lost the game…but I have never been a fan of using a quality relief pictcher for one batter. If I have a reliever the quality of Marshall, I don’t pull him after one hit in order to get a right on right matchup. Let him work out of it.
I don’t like dusty, but last night is one of those things that, although statistically unlikely, happens every now and then. Reds did the same thing to the cubs earlier in the season, Marmol couldn’t get anyone out, reds won the game. 1% (or whatever the percentage chance is) of the time, crazy things happen. Its like when the reds were scoring 60% percent of their runs on HR. Over a long season it all evens out. This team probably deserved to win at least 1 game from the tigers, but its a long season, it will even out in the end. . .
Indy you are aware ststistically that is not a good decision.Ok so you would have left him in to face another hitter. Would you have brought him back for the 8th. What if he gave up another hit to the righty would you have got him then? You are aware that this was the No.1 pen in the league. Also with a day off on Monday You had all your late inning guys available. I would suggest the way Dusty has used his pen this year has been a strentgh not a hinderance. I perfer Dusty’s way Indy not yours. Sorry my AF brother.
The bullpen sucked last night, but I disagree with removing Bailey. 112 pitches is not crazy and it’s not like he was starting out the inning.
Plus, if you leave him in to face Cabrera (who wasn’t the tying run), you can bring Marshall in if he doesn’t get him out. Or you can bring Marshall in to start the 8th inning if he does. Then, you still have Arredondo and Ondrusek to help in the 8th and 9th. Then, MAYBE you don’t have to bring Chapman in until the 9th if at all.
MikeD, no way in the world I let Homer face Miguel. Off day on Monday and Marshall and Arrendondo warm and ready. No way!!!! If Dusty would have done that and Homer gave up a bomb you would have invoked your 20/20 hindsight to chastize hm for not getting Bailey. No Manager in the League wuld have left him in with the backend of No. 1 pen in league available. Also 112 pitches is a lot of pitches in this day and age. Not everyone is Verlander.
