Doug, how would you rate Juan Duran’s year so far in Bakersfield. Considering his age and all I think he has done well. He seems to be holding his own.
86 strikeouts. 12 walks. Sub .700 OPS in the California League. That is atrocious.
Think I heard or read that he can throw the ball pretty hard..
Time to turn him into a pitcher ?
I would vote for this
Bring up HROD now. Throw Stubbs in a package to get somebody that is worth a #$%&. They have got to find some bats that can get on base in front of Votto and Phillips. Walt can not sit on his hands this year like he has the last 2 years. The pitching is pretty good and the National League is so up for grabs this year. If they could just get a little more consistent hitting they have a real shot at getting to the WS.
I think people continue to underestimate the value of Stubbs. It isn’t his fault that his manager is dumb and bats him high in the line up. Bat Stubbs 7th and he has all kinds of value. And really, Heisey is not an upgrade to Stubbs.
Before Stubbs came back from the DL, Doug, you said how he was doing great at hitting 2nd and should stay there. Now that he has cooled off, Dusty is dumb. Doesn’t seem very consistent.
You ride the hot hand. Now that he is 0-this millennium, you move him out of the spot. It isn’t as if Stubbs has some production history that suggests he is going to go back to what he was doing while he was hot. And even if we remove the Stubbs argument, Cozart is still hitting leadoff with a sub .300 OBP and has been there nearly all season long.
0 for 29 doesn’t fit well anywhere unless it is ninth and a pitcher.
Completely agree about Stubbs. I was ready to trade him this offseason, and what he’s done (or not done) this year makes my opinion stronger. Unfortunately his value is likely really low right now. But either way, the Reds would likely be much better off with Heisey in CF and Frazier in LF and HRod at 3rd.
Doug,
IYO what prospects are the Reds least likely to trade? What guys do you see as over rated that other teams might like more than you do?
Hamilton won’t be traded. I think the Reds overvalue him right now and I think other teams do too. Don’t take that as me saying he isn’t a good prospect, but if BA’s rankings are anywhere near right, he is overrated right now. There are still scouts out there questioning whether he will hit. But he is ranked in the Top 30.
I would be surprised to see them move Corcino as well. I think anyone else would be ‘fair game’.
I said two weeks ago that the offense would be worse, not better, when Stubbs and Rolen came back. Sure, it doesn’t help when your first two hitters are worse than your last two, but we’re reaching a tipping point methinks.
—Time to tell Rolen it’s time to go. We can do it the hard way or the easy way. HRod can give us more.
—Dump Valdez or Cairo, call up Janish.
—Fix CF. Play Hamilton there at AA the rest of the month. Seriously, could he do any worse than .218? I’d bet my right arm he wouldn’t. Ship out Stubbs or Heisey or both. Hell, put Bruce in CF, but do something.
—Give Mez more playing time. Hanigan is hitting .206 in June and July.
—Acquire a LH outfield bat.
—Demote Bray, call up Joseph.
Yes, Hamilton can do worse than .218 and I bet he would easily do worse, at least right now. Don’t make that bet if you want your arm. Ryan LaMarre on the other hand gets no mention and has had himself a pretty solid season in AA.
I have been preaching LaMarre as well because you know what you are getting with the guy. he is going to hit around .270-280 with a .350 OBP and steal you some bases. Look around the league at CF and there would be a lot of teams who would take that production.
And maybe the best defensive outfielder in the Reds organization!
That would probably be Jefry Sierra, in fact I think him listed as such in some publication.
The Reds could use that production.
I really like LaMarre – just a solid all-around player.
I would say Walt will do his due diligence and make the best deal he can. His greatest strength (and possibly weakness)is he is unafraid to pull the trigger on deals, especially involving young players and prospects. This at times will make we propect-followers shudder, but we have also picked up some nice talent.
As someone said above, how great is it to have HRod back? Lemarre and FPerez both deserve some upper level nods too. After the promotions the last few years as well as the trades, the depth is a concern at AA/AAA, but these guys may not be far off. Thankfully.
This team’s bench is a joke right now and most of them don’t deserve to be on a major league team. I think I rather have Leake getting AB’s than Valdez, Cairo and Harris. They need to forget what they are paying people and start playing the guys who are going to win games for this team.
With that being said the only good thing to take out of this is the fact that our starting pitching has been getting it done lately. They deserve to be winning a lot more games than what they are right now.
Doug,
Do the BATS have run for Lamarre if they move him up?
They may. Their current outfielders are Negron/Phipps/Gathright/Puckett/Rhinehart. None of those guys are the prospect that LaMarre is. I can’t imagine any of them truly blocking him if the Reds wanted to move him up.
Without the starting pitching we’ve been getting lately, this team is a disaster. As an opponent I wouldn’t give Joey anything to hit – a ‘mistake’ pitch would be any pitch within a foot of the plate.
If I were Baker with the organizations talent only (no trades) Here is my line-up and 13 position player roster after the break.
First I am retiring Rolen and Cairo.
Line-up
Phillips 2B
Rodriguez 3B
Votto 1B
Bruce RF
Frazier LF
Hesiey CF
Cozart SS
Hanigan/Mesoraco C
Pitchers
Stubbs (OF)
Valdez (2B-SS-OF)
Ludwick (OF-1B)
Gathright (OF)
Only change I might make would be a temporary move of Stubbs to Louisville for a couple of weeks to get things together replacing him with Janish. Frazier is my back-up at third and first as well.
Hard to win a pennant with 4 rookies in the line-up but I think it would be the most balanced line-up without outside acquisitions.
No way do I bring up Gathwright. I also don’t play Henry Rodriquez after two games at AAA. Stubbs is the CF and Frazier plays 3rd. Ludwick and Heisey play LF. Rolen retires and Walt finds a LH hitter for the bench. Possibly Giambi or Branyan. Janish is a career minor leaguer and stays there.
This team could easily finish 4th in the division all the while having the best bullpen in the NL and a starting 5 that doesn’t miss a start with Cueto leading in ERA. As a Red’s fan that would suck. If Dusty wasn’t done after that, he never will be.
How about if he wins the division. Does he get fired then?
Doug, you may have already addressed it but what do you see in Gathright? At this point maybe you throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.
