Big win by Reds. Didn’t look great in field. Thought Cozart was going to get BP killed a couple of times at 2nd. Cards very aggessive going into second on force outs and Cozart was late delivering the ball. Nothing dirty just very hard.Simon gave them 2 good innings. Stubbs struck out twice but he did hit the ball hard twice. Loved how Dusty used Rolen last night Pinch hitter and defensive replacement.Chapman was on his game last night. Slider was good and he was ahead in the count. Only hit he allowed was on a splinttered bat.
What happened with l-ville?! I think they are getting a supply of corked bats from down the street. Geesh, 22 runs?!
I’m not sure L’ville scored 22 runs per week in the month of June.
And for those who haven’t checked the Billings boxscore….they also scored 22!!
2 teams scored 22 runs! If you were going to pick 2 out of the group would you have picked l-ville? As for Billings, Maddox just keeps on hitting, Winker is still walking to first and Chacin got a blown save – before the 11 run beatdown in the 8th. What is the low-down on Pigott?
Wahoo!! Cingrani is sure getting it done. What a great year he is having! Might he be the ‘new’ wild card at the deadline?
Reds signed two more picks before the deadline yesterday;
#17 Ortiz, high school catcher
#37 Vincej, Pepperdine shortstop (national college shortstop of the year)
There is info in the Enquirer under Reds Insider that the REDS signed all 42 draft picks ???
I don’t believe that to be accurate. Especially since several players have come out and said they were returning/going to school.
Fay interviewed Walt Jocketty last night, and Walt singled out leadoff, cleanup, and bench as areas of concern. If I were Stubbs/Cairo/Rolen, I’d soak it all in for the next two weeks.
What do you think this means for Reds prospects, namely Hamilton and HRod?
For HRod it may mean a move up sooner rather than later. For Billy it may mean a callup in Sept to be a pinch runner. As has been discussed, he is far from ready to be a full-time contributor at the big league level but, his baserunning would likely play up now. As for the aforementioned trio (Stubbs/Cairo/Rolen) I might make it a quartet by adding Valdez to the group. HRod makes him redundant as a utility player and I don’t think I am going out on a limb by saying HRod may bring a little more to the plate.
HRod isn’t going to be the backup shortstop. Either Valdez or Janish is going to be on the team.
If I had to pick one, it would be SoftJ.
Babull, soft j. Been there done that. No thanks. Career minor leaguer.
So Valdez it is. I feel sooo much better. lol
Just for fun, I looked at Valdez vs Janish ML career stats.
(AVG/OBP/Slg/OPS)
Valdez…1030 ML ABs,
242/287/325/612
Janish….872 ML ABs
221/289/302/591
Janish younger, and slightly better D. Valdez better bat handler and can play OF.
Flip a coin….and it won’t make a bit of difference in W/L record.
For the position they would fill age is irrelevant. Janish can’t play the outfield and is a miserable bunter. I’ll take Valdez.
Agreed, Valdez > Soft J
Sultan in order to trade some one you have to have a willing trade patner. The only one of the three with any value is Stubbs. Rolen and Cairo and unmoveable. Walt won’t be eating there salaries either.

ON A ROLL
Check out highlights, analysis and interviews from around baseball at MLB Video Central. CINCINNATI — Brandon Phillips wants it known up front that he is not trying to manage the Cincinnati Reds, not trying to inject any request or demands, not trying to be a clubhouse lawyer.
He just wanted manager Dusty Baker to know something. So just before the All-Star break Phillips told his manager, “If you need me to go back to the leadoff spot, just tell me.”
And what did Baker say?
“I know you are,” he said.
Phillips believes it might be a way to jump-start a somewhat moribund offense, especially at the top where leadoff batter Zack Cozart is hitting .252 with a .298 on-base avereage and No. 2 batter Drew Stubbs is hitting .215 with a .286 on-base average.
It wouldn’t be novel. Phillips has batted leadoff often, including most of the 2011 season. But now Baker has him batting fourth, behind Joey Votto.
“We never talked about it happening, I just put it in his head,” said Phillips. “I feel I am more of a complete player leading off than I am batting fourth. If we don’t go get somebody to bat leadoff that leaves us with a hole.
“It would be easier for them to go find somebody to hit fourth and it would be to find somebody to hit leadoff,” said Phillips, although there are reports that the Reds aare sniffing around about leadoff hitter Juan Pierre.
“On our team, things are so different, so unique than all the others,” Phillips added.
Asked to expand, Phillips expanded profusely.
“We have a guy like Zack Cozart leading off and he is a No. 2 hitter, that type of hitter,” said Phillips. “On our team, because of holes, we have to shuffle people around.
“Like Drew Stubbs,” Phillips added. “He is more productive down in the order where all he has to do is hit the ball instead of thinking about bunting and moving runners. He worries about not getting on base instead of just playing baseball.”
Phillips said it is more difficult with a player like Stubbs in the No. 2 hole, an inexperience guy who has to think about too many things in addition to getting on base.
“Stubbs has talent, no doubt, but right now he is trying to plug a hole he isn’t suited to and he took off last year at the end of the year when he batted lower in the order,” said Phillips.
“Our lineup is just different — why I saw it is unique,” he added. There has been chatter about Phillips batted second, but he says, “I’d rather bat lead-off because I can steal bases whenever I want. Batting second I can’t do that.”
Nor can Stubbs steal many bases while he bats second, even though he runs faster than a rumor. He has 17 stolen bases in 21 attempts, but also has 77 strikeouts in 251 at-bats and it is impossible to steal first base when you are walking toward the dugout, bat dragging behind you.
Phillips realizes that if he moves from cleanup to leadoff it merely shifts a hole from one locale to another, the hole he leaves at cleanup.
“I wouldn’t move Jay Bruce from fifth to fourth because for some reason he doesn’t do as well when he bats cleanup as he does in the five-hole,” said Phillips. “That’s what I mean about our lineup being unique. Because we hae to plug holes and put players in different spots, they can’t be the players they should be.”
When second-half play began Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals, Phillips was still batting cleanup, Cozart was leading off, Stubbs was batting second and Bruce was batting fifth.
That, of course, is subject to change — something that will be decided by Baker and nobody else. But Phillips just wanted it known that he is ready, willing and more than able to slip into the leadoff spot if Baker decides to shuffle the deck and try a new deal.

Doug, couldn’t post the link so I posted the article.
Very interesting article. You don’t often get a player to expound on lineup construction – especially so eloquently. He couldn’t be more right. Another guy – this one in the clubhouse – speaking his mind. I think Dusty would have preferred that the conversation stay in his office, though. That new contract BP got is helping his leadership skills, don’t ya think? Stay tuned as Dusty displays his toothpick mangling skills! lol
A lot of sense there, so I don’t expect any of it to happen with Dusty at the helm.
Here is the lineup i’d go with right now.
1. BP, 2B
2. Hanigan/Mesoraco, C
3. Votto, 1B
4. Frazier, 3B
5. Bruce, RF
6. Ludwick/Heisey, LF
7. Cozart, SS
8. Stubbs, CF
9. Pitcher
Every day. Sorry if Rolen gets his feewings hurt being benched, but he is not an everyday player anymore. Probably not even an every other day player. He can be valuable as a bat off the bench and late inning defensive replacement. Mesoraco walks at a good rate and could really benefit from hitting in front of Votto. I wouldn’t be too against hitting Cozart there either though.
If we traded for a Span/Pierre:
1. Span/Pierre, CF/LF
2. BP, 2B
3. Votto, 1B
4. Frazier, 3B
5. Bruce, RF
6. Ludwick/Heisey/Stubbs, LF/CF
7. Cozart, SS
8. Hanigan/Mesoraco, C
9. Pitcher
I’d also have Mesoraco catching 3 of every 5 instead of 2 of every 5. His slugging at the bottom of the order will produce more runs than Hanigan’s OBP. Have Hanigan catch Cueto and Arroyo, and have Meso catch Latos/Leake/Bailey if they are allergic to mixing up the catcher/pitcher matchups.
Not sure I’ve heard Rolen whine about his “feewings”. I think this is a Dusty thing not a Rolen thing.
The reason things soured in Toronto was him getting moved down in the order. I think he can accept hitting 6th at this point in his career, but I don’t see him quietlly accepting a bench role. And a players manager like Dusty doesn’t seem likely to rock the boat. If Rolen is healthy, Dusty will start him over Frazier more often than not.
Doug, if I bring home another win today you are going to have quite a bit of pressure on you Sunday.LOl
On 2nd reading:
He just wanted manager Dusty Baker to know something. So just before the All-Star break Phillips told his manager, “If you need me to go back to the leadoff spot, just tell me.”
And what did Baker say?
“I know you are,” he said
Sounds like an odd response, doesn’t it? A Freudian slip, perhaps? Did the writer leave out the comma between ‘know’ and ‘you’?
Billings and Louisville both scoring 20+ runs.
To bad the weather was poor and Cisco only got one-inning.
Kinda wish BP was filling out the lineup card. But his common sense goes agaist everything Krusty stands for. And they don’t even have to trade for someone for this offense to produce more. Just put ludwick or Frazier oin the four hole and move stubbs to the seven spot. Basically just bats guys where they belong. This stuff isn’t rocket science.
Braves need a shortstop who can play now but a backup later.. Janish?
I’d love to try to pry away Prado from them. Maybe offer Stubbs and Janish since they’ll need a CF likely after Bourn hits FA.
This would heard Reds depth at this point so wouldn’t do it. Janish is a Cozart injury away from being the Reds’ starter.
