Denis Phipps is starting to heat up. Hopefully he is making an adjustment and his recent success isn’t just related to ‘luck’. Could possibly make one of Heisey or Stubbs expendable in the near future.
Stubbs has been expendable for me from the distant past. This team needs consistency from traditional power positions (right/left/3rd) and more contact from ss/cf. Coming in to this season I was looking for more than we have gotten from Phipps and Soto. Big disappointment. I realize they both have been banged up a little but this season – for both – has been a flop. Hopefully Phipps has turned some sort of corner. Don’t see him as anything but, possibly, a 4th outfielder/defensive replacement. I might even give him a shot to pitch. He has a GUN. If Soto rebounds then I would seek to trade him unless the team views him having a backup role going forward. If they don’t, I would hate to see him get the Dorn treatment.
His recent success is probably totally due to chance. His babip for the season is in the .240′s. It is overdue for a positive correction. I would find it very hard to believe that he will make Heisey or Stubbs expendable.
Expendable, because he could be ‘the’ 4th outfielder, allowing either Stubbs or Heisey to start everyday in CF. It allows Walt the opportunity to deal the other; most likely Heisey.
I’m disappointed in Stubbs, but Heisey hasn’t really taken the ‘bull by the horns’ with respect to taking the job. Furthermore, I’m not sure that Heisey can maintain CF on a consistent basis, so he’s likely the odd-man out. I’m sure he has value to teams looking for corner-outfield help.
If Phipps can make the ascension to the next level, then Heisey could be used as a trade-piece, perhaps bringing in a legit bat at 3b (e.g., Headley), thereby allowing Frazier to remain a utility player.
James Allen has seized the moment. Always a reliever in college and pros he has made the transformation to starter and is probably the Dragon’s best right now. Might have been the first Dragon to go 7 last night.
Is there something wrong with Cingrani? He was schelduled to pitch two days ago and he’s not in there again tonight. Are they just skipping him this turn to keep his innings down?
I tried looking into it, but was unable to come up with anything. Have to wonder if they are just skipping him to keep his innings down a little bit.
