Several posters mentioned a problem accessing the latest posts on Redlegnation – I have had the same issue, and found that when the page with the 7/22 post appears, if I click on the “HOME” page link in the upper left hand corner, the most recent posts will appear. FYI
Another solid outing from Corcino. His last few starts have all been about the same, and right in line with his 3.00 ERA. I think he likely stays in AA all year and then starts next year in AAA at age 22.
Awesome to see Hamilton’s great OBP hold over from A+ to AA so far, hopefully he can keep it up the rrst of the year.
Travieso with a solid 2nd start, hopefully someone reports on it, but who knows with AZL games.
Going to have to try to listen to Stephenson’s start, but thats a dicey proposition when you have young kids that will still be awake.
If you check Corcino’s season with Cueto’s last in the minors, both at age 21 and both with the majority at AA the numbers are very similar. Cueto got moved to Louisville for his last 4 starts. You have to wonder if they might do the same for Daniel.
Thinking of 2013, or if the need for an emergency starter in 2012, might Daniel be the answer.

Corcino’s ERA vs. righties is a run and a half higher than vs. lefties. I wonder if it’s an anomoly or if there’s still some work to be done in the repertoire department.
So, what’s the concensus around here on making Billy Hamilton eligible for the playoffs, yes or no?
I’m yes on Hamilton, while de-activating a pitcher.
Same here. A SB could make a big difference in a tight game.
I may be off, but wouldn’t Hamilton or any player to be on the playoff roster needs to be on the team before September? If this is true, I see zero chance of him being on the team in the playoffs.
August 31 to be eligible, unless there is an injury and then he can replace someone. I could see it happening.
It made a difference in the 1990 World Series run!!!
No, not worth burning two option years for a pinch runner. If they need a really fast guy, just use Theo Bowe, I doubt his option years will matter.
I’ll try to find the numbers for Taveras and Corey Patterson this afternoon and have Walt give them a call. Those guys can fly!
Hi ‘Dusty’! Glad you could join us!
Isn’t it just one season ahead of schedule anyway? I think he’ll need to be added to the 40-man next season anyway as he will have 4 seasons experience. So adding him this season is only one year early. For that, I’d definitely do it. Even as a pinch runner, he could be valuable down the stretch.
He diesn’t have to be on the 40 man until after the 2013 season. He may get out on it next year anyway, in which case it would only burn 1 option year, but I think it is an unnecessary risk for a small return. Hell, Leake is a fast runner and likely wouldn’t start in the playoffs. Granted he can’t steal like Hamilton, but would we be sending a runner with the game on the line anyway?
Totally agree with the Duke. If they need someone to run that badly they can do that with Bowe. Not that much difference in speed and bringing up Hamilton would at minimum cost them a year of team control in his pay. Not worth it.
That’s right…forgot you get 5 seasons, not 4, if you sign as an 18-year old before you must be added to protect against the Rule 5.
That does make it more risky. On one hand, if Hamilton is not ready by 2015, that means his star has really fallen. On the other hand, how valuable is a pinch runner, even one with his speed? Tough call.
It’s 4 full seasons, they don’t count the summer you sign.
Nice BP article (basic) on Cueto – you will see things that Doug and (I think) The Duke & others of you have shared before!
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17800
The first comment of the article misses a big thing (in the actual comments, not the article itself). In 2011, Cueto was lucky because of his defense. In 2012, he hasn’t been. He has similar ERA numbers because he cut down his walk rate and raised his strikeout rate.
Doug,
What do you think about going after LaHair? I think he would be a great fit. For now he could play 1st and when Votto comes back could move to the OF and be a good bench bat. I don’t know what the Cubs want of course and the rpice may be high but would be someone we could control for awhile.
Lahair had an insane April where he OPS’d 1.200 thanks to an incredible .600 BABIP. Since then here are his monthly OPS totals: .792, .686, .587. In the last two months he has 10 walks and 47 strikeouts to go along with 6 extra-base hits.
That isn’t a guy you actively go after, much less give up what it would probably take to get him.
please mesoraco to pirates
Sure, send us McCutchen
This innocent exchange hits the nail on the head for me. As fans we all want to upgrade, and at times get the other guys best player/prospect without giving up anything of value. Human nature fears losing the deal, from fantasy leagues to big league GM spots. Sure, I want Upton and McCutchen and _______(fill in the blank). BUT I don’t want to trade the General, or BHam or Cingrani or Corcino.
I would trade any of them in the right deal, but I have a hard time weighing 6 years of 3 prospects for 1 or 2 years of Pence or whoever.
Don’t get me wrong, I love this time of year and the speculation is awesome. So keep the conversation going and I think we are all very happy that we are relevant again in the larger MLB sense, and that we have some legit talent in the majors and minors.
They can have Heisey too, he is a Penn native
What about Bonifacio from Miami? OBP of 353 doesnt K alot and can steal a base. Wouldnt think it would cost much as far as Prospects
I may be in the minority but I want no part of Denard Span his on base percentage the last 3 years is barely above Stubbs,an at least Stubbs will give you the occasional long ball.I am getting very nervous about the trade deadline it seems to me Walt is going to give away corcino or cingrani and barely upgrade a position.
Guys according to Mark Sheldon Some high level Reds scouts are in Minnesota. His opinion is that could mean reds are serious about Span.
