H-Rod and Didi have definitely been scuffling lately. Good to see Henry have a good game.
Junior Arias had error number 31 last night. To put it in perspective Juan Francisco had 23 his year at Dayton. Edwin Encarnacion had 33 (+ 7 more at shortstop) during his season.
Didi over his last 10 games: .147 average with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts. BABIP of .161.
Doug, Felix Perez is having a nice year in AAA. Any future with the big club?
I think he should get a shot at being the LH bench OF next year. We’ll need to pick up a reserve SS in FA, and maybe another IF bench bat. Going with Heisey and Perez as bench OF could he a way to save some money with a lot of players getting healthy raises next year.
I think he could be an extra outfielder.
Guillon is taking up the mantle of Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde in the Reds system from JC Sulbaran. Miss a ton of bats, lots of walks, dominate one start, get pounded the next. Last night shows us what he is capable of, he’s just got to cut down on those walks.
How seriously should we be taking Seth Mejias-Brean? He’s a plus plus athlete and the biggest knock on him coming out of the draft was the lack of in game power which he is showing now. Draft reports talked about how he would put on a show in BP while at Arizona, but only had one HR in his 3 years there. He already has 7 n Billings, not to mention he has only K’s about once every 2 games so far as we’ll. He’s staring to look like he could have been a real steal considering you can dream a bit on his athleticism and raw power.
I don’t really think I would go as far as saying he has been pounded in any start this year. The guy has a 2.29 ERA and has only given up more than 2 earned runs once this year.
With SMB, I am cautiously excited. But I haven’t seen him play yet, so until I can talk to scouts who have seen him in Billings, I am holding off on saying too much.
I guess I was referring moreso to last year with him getting pounded. Sulbaran was in Dayton at 19 too, whereas Guillon is in Billings at 19/20. Perhaps Sulbaran should have spent some time in Billings.
Sulbaran’s struggles in Dayton are probably the reason why the high schoolers since (with exception of Jacob Johnson) have all spent that next year in rookie ball, where as before that, most went to Dayton.
It’s hard to argue taking a slower approach to develop high school arms. Just building their innings up usually takes 3 full minor league seasons.
Right. Now just that, but while we all WANT them to be ready as fast as possible, if they go the 1 level a year plan, that puts them in Dayton at 20 and Louisville at 23. How many pitchers are fully ready for the Majors before they are 23? Not too many of them.
Even if they are ready from a performance standpoint they would not allow them to throw enough innings at that age to be effective for a whole regular season, let alone a post season, meaning you have to have at least six starters ready.
Dont forget Valika was a stud in Billings and has not enjoyed that kind of success since. So we need to wait until he moves up, but lets hope that he turns out to be that steel of the draft.
Valaika was more of a baseball skills guy, whereas SMB is has much flashier tools and more of an athlete.
Power: SMB
Speed: SMB
Defense: Probably Valaika
Arm: SMB
Hit: I’ll call it a push for now, similar numbers at silimar ages in Billings
I remeber reading draft articles where it talks about SMB being able to do 360 dunks and other athletic feats
I forgot Valaika was only 20 in Billings, but here is a stats comparison :
Valaika
275 AB
.324/.387/.520/.907
22 2B
4 3B
8 HR
2 SB (2 CS)
24 BB
61 K
SMB in roughly half the at bats
133 AB
.368/.422/.653/1.053
10 2B
2 3B
7 HR
4 SB (0 CS)
13 BB
17 K
If you double SMB’s numbers (assuming he maintains this production, which he may not), then 2 things really stick out. SMB K’s only about half as much (while walking a tick more), and SMB has more HR power
Also SMB is 6’2″ as opposed to Valaika’s 6’0″/5’11″, a better frame to stil add some power.
Im not trying to compare the players but to say that we cant get to excited about rookie ball especially with college guys. I remember being so excited about valike thinking this guy was going to be the future SS plus he could really hit for average (when is the last guy at that time who was hitting for average). How did SMB last that long?
There was a couple knock on SMB coming out. The biggest was his power. A 3B with all of 1 HR his entire college career with metal bats. The other was he was still a bit raw as a baseball player. 2012 he hit in the .360′s at Arizona, before that not much of a track record.
One thing about SMB’s power is that Arizona’s field is HUGE and he doesn’t have to hit as far in Billings to be a homerun. He played at Hi Corbett field this year which was home to the Rockies spring training until this season. Dimensions are 366 to LF, 410 to Left Center, 392 to Center, 405 to RC, and 349 to RF.
In Billings he’s only got to go 329 to LF (over 40′ less), 410 to C (more here), and 350 to RF (about the same). I don’t know where he’s hitting his homeruns to, in either case, but the alleys in Billings, and likely other parks, aren’t as far as his home stadium in college, which “could” attest for the lack of power. But like has been said, cautious optimism is needed here.
While Arizona is a big park, they do play away games too. But, there is a reason the scouts and coaches get paid to work in the professional ranks and not the college ranks. They generally know better. SMB may have just needed a little tweak to add a little bit of that BP power that he had been showing off.
Rockies share Salt River with the D-Backs in the spring.
I’m more impressed with Winker than SMB. College guys should rake at RK level. An 18 y/o doing what he has done is amazing.
No doubt, Winker needs to cut down on the K’s, but what he is doing in the advanced rookie league right out of high school is damn impressive. I definitely have Winker rated higher.
33 k’s in 155 AB’s (0.21 K rate), that’s not bad for a kid his age at that level. Add in the 32 BB’s and I think this is nit-picking.
Current comparisons: Hamilton (0.21), Soto (0.26), LaMarre (0.25), Buckley (0.34), Waldrop (0.19).
Votto at 19: 0.33 (Billings/Dayton)
Bruce at 19: 0.24 (Dayton)
Does Winker do a week at the end of the season in Dayton?
Doubtful. Billings is fighting for the playoffs. Dayton may be fighting for a wild card if they go on a lossless week starting today.
Winkler probably is in my top 10 now, Guillon is in the top 20, SMB is on the radar.
I agree with this exactly.
have Winker 6 or 7, Guillon 17, and I don’t quite know where to put SMB yet. I think I am higher on him than most.
Never know who you will see at a game. Former Mets GM Omar Minaya, who now works for the Padres, was at the Dragons game last night, I assume watching the Tin Caps.
Omar is a very good baseball guy. Hey Doug just a couple of questions regarding your trip to Pensacola, or as we say in NY Pepsicola. How did you like the park, did your run into Elliot or any other Bloggers. What did you think of Cingrani, Dela Rosa Manno and ravin
sorry so many questions.
