With the “Guillotine” (Ryan Schuling Mustangs radio announcer’s nickname for him) getting promoted to Dayton, should Gerson get promoted to Blaze since he’ll be 24 soon & is doing OK in Dayton?
I don’t think his age matters as Gerson is likely just org filler. I’m sure they’ll make a suitable roster move. Odds are somebody is hurt at this point in the season.
Gerson was promoted yesterday.
You hope that next year with Cisco another year removed from Tommy John surgery that his stuff misses more bats (.294 opp avg, 6.05 K/9), but you have to love how low his walks are. Only 3 in 38.2 IP is showing some nice control, going along with a pretty good ground ball rate as well. Even if Stephenson starts in High A next year (which isn’t a sure thing), Dayton’s rotation should be stacked (barring injuries). Guillon, Cisco, I think Langfield goes back to starting next year, Moscor shows a lot of potential, maybe Sal Romano, Mugarian has a nice arm, Amezcua has been stepping it up lately. If you throw Stephenson on top of that, it could be real nasty. Maybe Travieso as well since he is getting the work in the AZL now that Stephenson didn’t get to do in 2011, but I they’ll start him in Billings.
I don’t know that Cisco is ever going to be a big strikeout guy. Coming out of the draft he was considered incredibly polished, but his stuff was very “Mike Leake-esque”. Maybe he gets his k rate up some, but I would be surprised if he were ever considered as a strikeout pitcher.
Doug, Amir Garett was pushed to Billings. Was that move made out of need or is he pitching that good.
He is an arm that the Reds want to succeed. He has shown a propensity to walk guys, though most of his walks did come in 1 game where he walked 5 batters in 1.2 innings. It is really tough to take much from his stats so far given that he has a handful of innings. Outside of his first two games, he has an ERA of 3.06.
The real problem is that starting next month he is going to not play baseball until next April. Hard to improve when you don’t have the time to put the work in. Garrett has a million dollar arm, but basketball is going to make it a lot harder to ever make significant improvement.
Hamilton still leads the Cal League by 24 steals. He’s just 6 behind the leader of the Southern League. Has anyone ever led two seperate leagues in SB in the same year? Any counting stat?
Hopefully Theo can catch him.
Bowe is about 35 behind and gets thrown out 35% of the time, so I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one.
There’s a nice article on espn.com about Billy Hamilton. One interesting tidbit in there was that a scout who scouted him in high school says he threw 92 mph as a relief pitcher. I know Billy has arm slot issues, but that would suggest he has the potential to have a decent arm for either shortstop or the outfield.
Nice article on Dusty

About as fluff a piece as there is. Bronson thinks he is hip because he can go to a jazz club or other clubs and “fit in”. Ryan Ludwick is having more fun than anywhere he has played before. Of course Ludwick has never been on a team as good as this Reds team. He played on a Cardinals team that went 91-71. This team is on pace for a handful more wins than that team.
Doug, he relates well to his players and they play hard for him. Even the young guys who many say he abuses. I posted a article yesterday with comments by Frazier. He commented on how Dusty realtes so well to the players drawing on his playing experience. He indicated Dusty understood the drain a long season can have on a player and indicated it was great he new when a guy needed a day off. He was drawing from his personal experiences with him.
No doubt, after playing for LaRussa/Bud Black/Clint Hurdle, Dusty must seem like the coolest guy in the world.
sultan, we do a lot of focusing on what Dusty’s weaknesses are. What he does VERY well is relate to his players and manage the clubhouse. If you think that isn’t important take a look at Bobby V. Dusty’s players play hard for him. Youngsters and Vets.
If Dusty would stop hittibg the two worst OBP 1-2, i’d be pretty happy with what he has done this year. Other than maybe leaving in starters a little too long occasionally, but that is nitpicking.
Duke, who would you like to bat one and two? As far as pitching the fact we have one of the best staffs in ML’s and have used the same five starters is nothing short of handling the staff perfectly. Instead of nitpicking why don’t you just give him his due. He has done great with the staff.
The season isn’t over yet. If Cueto is gassed mid September and gets lit up in the playoffs it won’t really matter. Games likeba couple weeks ago where Cueto was over 100 pitches through 7 on a hot day game and Dusty has him bat and then pitch the 8th. He tweaked his back running out the grounder and then again reaching on a play at 1B before getting pulled before the inning was over. The bullpen was rested and we had a comfortable lead. Thankfully his back turned out to be OK, but it was a risk that didn’t need to taken and could have given Cueto a less stressful start during the dog days.
The Red Sox aren’t losing because of Bobby V, they are losing because their pitching is terrible. They are scoring a ton of runs, so clearly plenty of guys are playing hard for him. The pitching simply isn’t good.
Doug if you don’t think players going to management is a distraction and can be a impedment to winning I don’t know what to tell you. It has been reported in multiple publications players are unhappy with his direction and that my friend causes a lack of focus, Don’t know what you do for a living but I soldiered for 20 years and I can tell you if troops are going up the chain and aren’t confident in your leadership performance suffers.
Has their attitude caused a problem? Maybe. But it isn’t nearly the problem that the pitching staff sucking is. And that is why they are losing, not because Adrian Gonzalez doesn’t particularly like his manager.
Doug, I agree the pitching has been terrible but attitude plays a bigger role than you would like to believe especially when it indicates Dusty is doing a good job.MAYBE LOL. If you don’t think the distractions going on in that clubhouse aren’ t impacting team and player performance Your naive.
Doug, one other point. You do realize that Dusty has managed many years. He has performed on the Network. If he loses this job tomorrow he will manage again if he is so inclined. This my friend indictes ownerships and people in the industry value his knowledge, experience and leadership and have for many years now. While its been pointed out he was fired in Chicago and let go in SF only to surface in Cincinnati. I think it might be wise to realize he may just be a little sharper than you give him credit for. I’m aware you do think managers are hired based on past experiences and personal relationships rather than qualifications. I don’t entirely disagree with that but gaining the trust and confidence of your players is no small feat when multi million dollar player contracts are at stake. I think this is a piont you routinely overlook. Managing a group of young milionaires is not a cake walk.
I think it is causing some problems. But they are minimal ones when compared to why they are not winning as much as had hoped.
Doug, it is amazing how much better Bruce is when he goes the other way. This guy should be hitting at least 280 with 35 bombs and 100 RBI’s. Think he’ll ever figure it out. I certainly will take his production now but he can be better
Doug, Strictly from a pitching stand point, how does our minor league system stack up to others. Seems the Reds have really taken a huge step forward in the scouting and developing of pitchers through their system in the last 7-8 years. Especially in the power arms department. If you have lots of pitching you can acquirer hitting.
I would guess we are fringe top 10 amongst pitching. We have a couple high uoside guys in Stephenson and Travieso, but little track record to back them up. Corcino and Cingrani profile as more mid rotation guys. Beyond that we have a lot of question marks and guys with potential.
What’s the deal with Massett? He hasn’t pitched in a while.
