September is right around the corner. With September comes the inevitable September call ups. Here are the players who are active and on the 40 man roster, but not currently with the Reds:
- Logan Ondrusek
- Todd Redmond
- Jordan Smith
- Pedro Villarreal
- Devin Mesoraco
- Didi Gregorius
- Donald Lutz
- Henry Rodriguez
- Neftali Soto
- Chris Valaika
- Denis Phipps
Of the guys on that list, I can see these guys getting called up: All of the pitchers, Devin Mesoraco, Didi Gregorius, Henry Rodriguez and Chris Valaika.
You can never have too much pitching, so assuming health, I can’t see them not calling up everyone. Mesoraco is of course coming back. I think that Gregorius and Rodriguez both find there way up as some left handers off of the bench and Valaika finds his way up because he has been there before.
I also think they will bring up one more guy. Billy Hamilton. I don’t think he will get much playing time or more than 2 starts, but I think they will use him as a pinch hitter every now and again while being a pinch runner.
What do you guys think?
The Arizona Fall League rosters are supposed to be coming out soon. Each team sends 5 or 6 guys to the league. There are rules about who is eligible and who isn’t though. Here is a list of guys who I believe could find their names on the roster:
- Bryson Smith
- David Vidal
- Donald Lutz
- Travis Mattair
- Ryan LaMarre
- Billy Hamilton
- Josh Ravin
- Drew Hayes
- Curtis Partch
What do you guys think? Am I missing anyone?

Arizona u r dead on would not be surprised to see Obispo. Would not be surprised to see the reds bring up a lefty relief guy, hey Mel How about Manno, that might be a great idea
I thought about Obispo but he doesn’t work since he is from the DR and therefor he is exempt.
would of thought Donnie if he was still here, but I really feel they want a lefty in there Doug what rules apply for the AZ fall league
AA and AAA players only, with the exception of 1 player lower than that. Less than 1 year MLB time. Players on the DL must be active 45 days prior to the start of the league. Players from the DR, VZ, Mexico and PR are exempt since they have their own winter ball.
Doug I m sorry , do you mean Obispo can not play in AZ
Yes, he is ineligible to play there because he is from the Dominican where they play their own winter leagues.
Billy Hamilton unlikely to get called up this year. He is not on 40 man roster and is under protection through 2013. Also, it would start his MLB service clock and he would be highly unlikely to make the playoff roster as a pinch runner only.
Help in a pennant race trumps all those things. If upper management thinks his legs will help, then he will be there.
other guys can pinch run..
Yeah, but not like him. And while I am generally against using up that option a year earlier than we have to, if Hamilton isn’t ready to stick in the Major League in 2016, then it wouldn’t be worth keeping him around anyways.
For Arizona it always seems to me each team is responsible for a catcher, infielder, outfielder and three pitchers (one of who is usually a lefty). Using that formula I would say:
Barnhart, Hamilton, LaMarre, Lotzkar(who is on 40-man and not listed above), Manno, Villarreal
Lotzkar is currently on the DL. Doubt they are sending him.
I could see Billy Hamilton going to the AZL as a centerfielder. Donald Lutz should be there as well just to get atbats, especially since he is a little old for his league. It would be nice to get some innings for Josh Ravins after his injury, so I would hope he is sent out. Partch couls also use the innings since he is still new to relieving and a little old for his league. I think the AZL could help Hamilton and Partch prepare for the jump to AAA in 2013.
Why do you think Lutz is old for AA 23 is not old
Hey Doug, Thanks for posting the AZL question. My AZL picks/reasons are:
Freeman RHP, 08 draft/earned promotion & Reds decide if on 40-man roster.
Serrano, RHP, 27 yr old/Reds decide if part of future.
Partsch, RHP, 07 draft/Reds decide if on 40-man roster.
Manno, LHP, 09 draft/Reds need LHP in AAA in ’13 as Reds backup.
Fleury, C, 09 draft/Reds need C in AAA in ’13 as Reds backup from injury.
Hamilton, SS, 09 draft/Needs AZL experience for 2013 AAA & Reds backup.
LaMarre, CF, 09 draft/Needs AZL experience for 2013 AAA & Reds backup.
Alternates:
Fellhauer: Needs AZL experience for 2013 AAA & Reds LH backup OF.
Lutz: needs OF work if can’t play in Caribbean Winter Leagues.
LaMarre was drafted in 2010
Thx Jimmy.
Freeman for AFL
Do you think Felix Perez has a shot of getting a call up? I realize he’d have to be put on the 40-man. But there are some guys on there that can’t be expected to help much this year or beyond.
Also, no call up for Soto?
I think Perez gets left back for the same reason Soto does…. there simply isn’t room for him. Both are right handed hitters, which we don’t have a need for. Both play spots where there is plenty of other options to look at.
I could be totally wrong here, but that is my gut feelings on both.
Perez’s profile says he’s a left-hander. I would think that he could help as another LH PH off the bench. He’s certainly hit better than anyone else this year at L-ville.
He is….. yesterday was a really long day.
No worries man. I just think he may be the one bat that could possibly help/add something.
He could, but at the same time that would require a 40 man move for someone who may only get 10 at bats.
I think Walt will bring up Billy Hamilton on August 31……All the “starting the arbitration clock early” talk is a bunch of horse manure. Hamilton can be a very valuable pinch runner for the Reds in the Playoffs……Just ask Dave Roberts and the Boston Red Sox fans in 2004.
