In case you missed the post yesterday afternoon, I looked at potential Rule 5 players who the Reds will need to protect or risk losing. If you only saw the original post when it went live in the afternoon, check it out again as I added two players that I missed to the list. I could see up to 7 players being protected and as few as 5. Update: Here is who was protected:

  • Daniel Corcino – RHP
  • Josh Ravin – RHP
  • Curtis Partch – RHP
  • Carlos Contreras – RHP
  • Ismael Guillon – LHP
  • Yorman Rodriguez – OF

That leaves a few rather interesting guys who could be taken. At the top of that list, if I were running another team, would be Josh Fellhauer. While he is likely only a platoon outfielder, he is the majority partner in that platoon who can play both corners well and can also cover you in center. He make a lot of contact and will draw walks. He is a very ideal guy as a 4th outfielder right now.  A guy like Mark Serrano could potentially help out someone. He has an average fastball, perhaps slightly above-average and an above-average to plus slider to go along with solid control. Tim Crabbe has thrown harder in the past than he did this season, at times getting up to 95. He also has a solid slider/cutter to work with. I could see a team trying him in the bullpen in the spring as a look/see to see if he can find that velocity again. I am not sure anyone else would be looked at strongly this season, though I think some guys who were eligible for the first time this year may wind up needing to be protected next year if they continue to develop on the paths they are on.

Over the weekend the Reds Arizona Fall League team played for the championship. Billy Hamilton left the game after crashing into the center field wall, but he is fine. Hamilton went 2-5 with a triple in the game. Didi Gregorius went 1-4 and made a nice defensive play. Tim Crabbe started and got the win. Josh Ravin threw two perfect innings with 3 strikeouts. Curtis Partch threw a shutout inning of work.

Why is Corcino playing winter ball. Any fear of over working his arm?

  2. Daryl

Corcino was added yesterday according to He’s the only one so far.

  3. Daryl

Actually Corcino, Contreras, Guillon, Partch, Ravin and Yorman were added. Surprised by the Fellhauer omission. I would’ve added him as well.

    • Norwood Nate

Contreras wasn’t listed yesterday until later, but it does make a lot of sense to protect him. I agree with the others protected, as it is who I would have protected. The lone exception would be YRod. I don’t see the need to protect him at this point. A team would be stupid to draft him and let him sit on their bench all year. He’s a few years away from being able to play at the MLB level, and that’s if he can get some things figured out. I would have protected Fellhauer instead. But I understand not wanting to use up all 7 open slots.

Yeah, I had his signing date listed wrong in my spreadsheet. Until someone pointed it out, I didn’t even know he was eligible.

Doug it doesnt look like a lot of prospects are going to Redsfest this year. I wish we could get Winker to appear.

I wonder how many MLB teams added 4 homegrown Latin America signings to their 40 man this winter? Hope they do not lose Felix Perez or Juan Duran in this draft. Hope they can continue to produce 4 latin guys a year to add to the roster. I wonder if JC Sulbaran was added to the Royals roster and if not Do you think the Reds would draft him in the rule 5 draft? Who would the Reds be interested in drafting in the rule 5 draft?

    • Doug Gray

No one will take Duran. Perez isn’t eligible. Not sure about Sulbaran, but the Reds won’t take him. The Reds don’t have any roster spots to take anyone. I mean technically they do have one open, but I can’t see them using their last spot on a gamble.

Contreras seems to have gotten a lot of love recently. Will he make it to AA in 2013 ??

  7. charliefunny

Freeman’s will be gone. I thought he’d go to AFL a couple months ago, but he’s like the Dorn of the pitching staff. He shoulda been promoted to AAA midseason after dominating in AA with a WHIP under 1, to take Judy’s slot ; Judy shoulda been released but the Reds kept his 5+ ERA in AAA. Dumb move.

    • MK

If he were left-handed I would agree with you. But, most organizations have a Justin Freeman type right-handed pitcher who has pitched AAA ball, so I can’t see them gambling a 40-man roster spot on him.

In fact that person for the Reds might be Josh Judy, who even has big league experience.

Zach Stewart designated for assignment by the Red Sox. If they don’t trade him, the Astros will probably claim him off waivers. The Reds should see how much it would cost to reacquire him. He still could be a solid setup man.

    • coltholt

He has been on 4 teams so far. I don’t think that he is a sure fire bet to be claimed.

  9. zblakey

Lots of people bashed the WJ for including Stewart in the trade for Rolen. Guess they should have complained about EE instead. Goes to show you never know how trades are really going to play out at the time they are made.

    • coltholt

EE wasn’t worth anything until this past season when he was well beyond team control and he could have walked via free agency. Also…he wasn’t playing 3B anymore. Unless you were anticipating Votto missing 50 games…there would have been no place for him to play him. It might sound nice…but it really doesn’t make as much sense as you make it sound.
