On Friday afternoon I co-hosted Redleg Nation Radio with Chad Dotson of Redleg Nation. We talked about the Reds coming down the stretch and had some Billy Hamilton talk. You can download it here or you can stream it from the link above.
Speaking of Billy Hamilton. Let’s get into this real quick. There is no way, short of an injury, that you can keep him off of the playoff roster. We have seen him on the bases and I am sure that alone is enough to get him on the roster. And it should be. He is an absolute weapon on the bases and especially in close games, like most playoff games are, it can really be a game changer (which we have seen several times already). But what we haven’t seen yet, and we may not but I believe we should, is Hamilton in center field for defensive purposes. Assuming there is no huge collapse ahead, the NL playoff teams are going to be Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Atlanta and Los Angeles. We know that the Reds have a small outfield, so perhaps outfield range doesn’t come into play quite as much. Every other team though has large outfields where range matters quite a bit more. While I certainly wouldn’t start Hamilton over Choo, if the Reds have a lead heading into the 7th inning it would be beneficial in my opinion to put Hamilton in center and let him make plays that Choo simply can’t if the opportunity arises. I really don’t know if Dusty will go that route, we haven’t really had a chance to see it yet. What do you guys think? Am I crazy?
Tomorrow I will run season reviews for the Billings Mustangs and the AZL Reds. On Wednesday I will begin publishing player season reviews on roughly 160 players. I am going to alternate pitchers and hitters and am going to just use a random number generator to choose what order I will be writing them in. Next Monday I will begin the State of the Farm series, which is one of my favorite features of the offseason.
