John Fay spoke with Walt Jocketty yesterday and Walt said that he doesn’t expect anything to happen with Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero. There was plenty of thought going around that Guerrero could replace someone in the infield for the Reds to help boost the offense.
Baseball America has finished the league Top 20 prospect lists for every league but one, but the Reds don’t play in that league. Here is a quick breakdown of how the Reds did in each of the leagues that they were in.
|League||Teams in League||Prospects Ranked|
|Arizona Rookie League||13||None|
|Pioneer League||8||Phillip Ervin (2) & Ben Lively (6)|
|Midwest League||16||Robert Stephenson (3) & Jesse Winker (9)|
|California League||10||Yorman Rodriguez (13)|
|Southern League||10||Yorman Rodriguez (20)|
|International League||14||Billy Hamilton (10)|
With my weekend away from the home office due to my nephew being born (everyone is just fine and healthy and now at home), I didn’t get much of a chance to write much over the weekend (I usually will sit down and write on Sundays while watching tv). So here is a quick update on the fall/winter ball participation so far.
Arizona Fall League
The Arizona Fall League didn’t play over the weekend, but they did host a hitting skill competition. Each team had a representative and Travis ‘Moose’ Mattair was the Reds representative. Steve Berthiaume tweeted out a picture of Mattair in the dugout with a few other players. Cameron Rupp, a Phillies prospect and former teammate with Mattair tweeted out a picture during his trip to the plate.
Yorman Rodriguez was the only Red to play on Monday, going 2-4 with a run scored. Apparently he scored from first base on a single in the 7th innings. He is now hitting .412/.421/.706 through 19 plate appearances so far. Travis Mattair is hitting .286/.444/.714 in 9 plate appearances. Tucker Barnhart is hitting .286/.444/.286, also in 9 plate appearances. Ryan LaMarre is 1-4 with a walk in just one game played so far. On the pitching side, Drew Hayes has thrown 2 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts in 2 outings. Chad Rogers has also fired 2 shutout innings with 2 strikeouts in his only outing. Jamie Walczak allowed 4 runs in 1.1 innings with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. Michael Lorenzen allowed 7 runs in 2 innings with 3 walks in his only outing.
Venezuelan Winter League
Felix Perez is off to a very strong start in the Venezuelan Winter League where he plays for the Aguilas de Zulia. He comes into today with a 4-game hitting streak (only played four games), with three of those games being 2-hit games. So far he has a .412/.450/.647 line through four games with a steal, 3 runs, 3 RBI, a double and a homer. Carlos Sanchez is playing with Cardenales de Lara and got a start on Saturday where he went 1-4. He appeared in the game on the 11th, but didn’t get a plate appearance. On the pitching side of things Yohan Pino is pitching with the Tigres de Aragua. He started on the 11th, allowing 1 run in 4 innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts. Pedro Villarreal is pitching for the Tiburones de La Guaira. He also started on the 11th and allowed an unearned run in a 4 inning start with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
