I went through the Cincinnati Reds media guide this morning and tracked down every player who was signed in the 2013-2014 international signing period (which begins each year on July 2nd). That list doesn’t include a guy like Jacob Constante, Sebastian Elizalde, Davide Anselmi and others who signed in 2013, but signed before the current signing period began and actually fall in last years signing period.

Here is the list of the 24 players signed:

Franklin Vargas SS R/R 11/8/1996 5′ 11″ 170 Azua, DR 8/12/2013

I hope I didn’t miss anyone, but I didn’t double check either.

There were 10 pitchers signed with one left hander. Eight infielders, with seven being shortstops and one third baseman. There were four outfielders and two catchers. There were also two switch hitters among the group.

The biggest signing from this group, at least to my knowledge, is Reydel Medina. He signed for $400,000, taking up over 20% of the bonus cap that the Reds were allotted in the signing period under the new rules (and the 2nd lowest allotment in baseball for the period). Missing from this list though is Luis Tejada, who Baseball America had reported agreed to terms with the Reds on July 24th, 2013 for $600,000. Tejada was once suspended for falsifying his age, so perhaps it is just taking a very long time to get his contract approved, but it is interesting if that is the case because this is quite a long time to wait for an approval.

What I think is interesting is we are getting players from the usual places like the Dr, and Vz but now I see players from Columbia, Hati and Aruba. What a change from 5 or 6 years ago..

None from Puerto Rico, though. That seems a bit odd.

puerto ricans are in the draft so they would not be international signings.

With Puerto Rico being part of the US, those players are subject to the draft, like Neftali Soto.

The Haitian is really interesting. There has never been a big leaguer from Haiti. The same island as the DR and no players.

At the end of March I try to project the starters for each roster. I don’t like doing it too early in the spring though.

Off the subject but it should would be nice if Thom B and Doug Flynn actually spent some time talking about the game.

That seems to be a running thing when Flynn is in the booth.
