Earlier today the Cincinnati Reds announced that they have promoted utility player Kristopher Negron and sent RHP Carlos Contreras to the Triple-A Louisville Bats. Negron was not on the 40-man roster. To create room they DFA’d Brett Marshall, who has really struggled since coming off of the disabled list.

First, let’s talk about Negron. He can play defense, quality defense, at second base, third base, shortstop, center field and both corner spots in the outfield. This season he got off to a brutal start at the plate, hitting .148 in April. However since May rolled around he has hit .309/.370/.461 with 12 walks and 40 strikeouts in 183 plate appearances. Oh, and he has even thrown a shutout inning this year.

Carlos Contreras was basically just counting his days until after the double header came and went. He allowed a run in 4.1 innings with the Reds, which gave him a 2.08 ERA. He allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two batters. After spending the year in Pensacola prior to his call up, he now finds himself in Louisville with the Bats.

Brett Marshall was designated for assignment. He injured his finger on the last start of the spring and recently came off of the disabled list and was sent to Louisville. In seven games since returning he has a 10.97 ERA with 27 walks and 14 strikeouts in 21.1 innings. My guess is that he will clear waivers, though he has shown quality stuff in the past, so I guess there is a team out there who may want to take a chance.

The lineup in today’s game may be the least threatening this century. And watch them score 10 runs.

When you have that lineup and they give you 3 runs, we need to win this one.

If you would have told me before the game that this lineup would give you three runs in the game, I would have happily accepted it.

AAA lineup apparently can score a few off a AAA pitcher.

A win would be very cool. Reds haven’t swept a five game series since 1976. 2006 is the last time it happened in mlb.

Maybe need a replacement for Homer. Looked like a groin to me butvthey say right knee.Game is on WGN if you didn’t know. Thank goodness All Star Break is coming.

What about putting Homer on 15-day DL (if needed) bringing up an extra reliever, pulling a starter up for his 1st start of 2nd half, bring back Contreras, then Bailey when healthy?

If Bailey only needs 15 days, I would call up Contreras and tell him he is starting the fifth game after the All-Star break, and use him in the bullpen until the break. That would put Bailey to only needing to miss one start.

Not if he comes up for someone placed on the DL.
