Game Notes

Brett Marshall put together the best start of his season, giving up just one unearned run in 5.2 innings with four walks and eight strikeouts. He left the game with a lead thanks to a rally in the fifth inning where the Bats strung together five straight singles to bring in three runs. After exiting, Marshall handed the game over to JJ Hoover. Hoover stranded a runner to end the sixth and pitched a shutout inning to follow. A solo home run led off the bottom of the ninth to pull Toledo within a run, but Ryan Dennick entered the game and shut things down with a perfect frame.

Game Notes

Pensacola took an early 1-0 lead when Yorman Rodriguez walked and came around on a Kyle Waldrop single. Rodriguez got things started again in the third with a leadoff double and Kyle Waldrop brought him in again, this time with a double of his own to put the Blue Wahoos up 2-0. Joel Bender had tossed three shutout innings but ran into a little trouble in the fourth and allowed two runs in the fourth . Bender exited after the fourth with a good showing after coming up from Dayton to make the start. Montgomery got the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth, but the lead didn’t last long. Devin Lohman led off with a single and just like twice before, Kyle Waldrop came through with an RBI hit. The Biscuits went ahead in the seventh with a single run and extended their lead in the ninth with four runs to go up 8-3. Pensacola didn’t go quietly though, loading the bases with one out. Brodie Green singled in a run and Travis Mattair singled in two more to make it 8-6 with two outs and two on, but that was all the home team could get and they fell by that same score.

Bakersfield lost 8-5. Box Score

Game Notes

Lake Elsinore scored four times in the first inning and held a 4-0 lead until the third when the Blaze were able to put a rally together. Joe Hudson had a 1-0out walk and came around on a Beau Amaral homer to cut the deficit in half. With a runner on Marquez Smith doubled to put two runners on and both scored when Sean Buckley doubled to tie the game up. Drew Cisco settled in after the first inning, holding the Storm scoreless from the second inning through the fifth before handing things over to the bullpen. Lake Elsinore broke the tie in the seventh with a single run and extended their lead with three more in the eighth inning to put the game away.

Dayton lost 3-2 in 10 innings. Box Score

Game Notes

West Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning and held that lead until the bottom of the sixth when they added a run to their lead. Jon Matthews singled to lead off the seventh and scored on a two out triple by Jonathan Reynoso. Reynoso would score to tie the game up on a Nick Benedetto single. After six strong innings by Amir Garrett the Dragons went to the bullpen. Zack Weiss took over and tossed three shutout innings to send the game to extra innings. The tenth inning saw West Michigan walk-off on a 1-out RBI double. The loss moved the Dragons half of a game back of Great Lakes for the second half wild card spot. Great Lakes comes to Dayton for a three game set on Sunday.

Billings was postponed.

AZL Reds lost 4-1,

The Padres grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning and added to it in the third and sixth with single runs to jump out 4-0. The Reds got on the board in the seventh after loading the bases with no one out and scoring on a passed ball, but that was all that they would get as they fell 4-1 in the first game of a double header.

Game Notes

The Padres took an early lead, going up 1-0 in the first. The game stayed there until the top of the sixth inning when the Reds scored three runs with the big blow coming on a Gavin LaValley 2-run homer. On a night with strong pitching from Jacob Constante, Pedro Damian and Jake Paulson the Reds picked up a split of the double header with only an unearned run keeping them from a 1-hit shutout.

    It seems like so many of our prospects have hit the wall as their seasons start to wind down. It’s great to see Yorman Rodriguez defy that trend. I think he’s making a big statement about his maturity and readiness for the next level by running thru the finish line.

    Don’t know what was up with Dragons bullpen or coaches. Zack Weiss has not pitched into the fourth inning in an outing all season.
