The Reds trade Kevin Franklin to the Braves Doug Gray August 11, 2017 7 Comments The Cincinnati Reds have traded Kevin Franklin to the Atlanta Braves. This move is the completion of the trade for Brandon Phillips from earlier this year. Back in February when the trade went through the Reds received left handed pitcher Andrew McKirahan and right handed pitcher Carlos Portuondo. The two players coming back in that trade have barely played for the Reds. Carlos Portuondo was released a week into the season after throwing 0.2 innings in one game for Pensacola. Andrew McKirahan was coming off of his second Tommy John surgery when he was traded to the Reds. He’s thrown 6.2 innings on rehab with the AZL Reds, Billings Mustangs and Pensacola Blue Wahoos this season. He is now back on the disabled list and last pitched on July 20th. Kevin Franklin was the Reds 2nd round pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. He’s struggled offensively since he was drafted. He’s posted a career .233/.281/.348 line between four stops in five seasons. Known for his raw power coming out of high school, the power hasn’t yet translated into games. In 764 career at-bats he’s managed to hit just 11 home runs. With that said, it still shows up in batting practice. During the 2016 and 2017 seasons Kevin Franklin hasn’t seen much playing time. In 2016 he played in just 28 games for the Dayton Dragons. In 2017 he began the year in Arizona and joined Dayton around the mid-season mark and palyed in 14 games, hitting .205/.255/.295 before being moved to Daytona. Once there he only played in 13 games and hit just .150/.190/.175. 7 Responses Gordon August 11, 2017 So at this point, I guess we can definitely say the Reds traded Brandon Phillips and Kevin Franklin for $1 million and a $5 scratch-off. Wes August 11, 2017 No it was powerball and mega million. Still a chance trade pays off big. MK August 11, 2017 I don’t remember a player to be named later announced on the original trade. Wonder if the Randy Ventura deal could have been part of all this. Randy in Chatt August 11, 2017 Doug, off topic but it is game 46 for Billings tonight. Ian Kahalo who has been in rehab (drugs) has been serving his 50 game suspension. Has there been word on him working out and being ready to start with Billings soon. Will he be ready to go in 4 more games? Do you know where he is at according to him being ready to go? Greenfield Red August 11, 2017 More importantly, let’s hope he has figured out his personal life and decision making. Randy in Chatt August 11, 2017 That’s a given. I heard that he is doing whatever he can to get back so I assume he is taking his rehab seriously. I want to know where he is at, or if there has been any word, that he is ready to get his baseball life back on track. Arnold Ziffle August 15, 2017 Who??!! The Reds sure had a lot of bad luck with their 2nd round picks in those awful 2011-2014 drafts. In ’11–OF Gabriel Rosa In ’12–3B Tanner Rahier In ’13–3B Kevin Franklin In ’14–3B Taylor Sparks In ’15–RHP Tony Santillan In ’16–C Chris Okey In ’17–OF Stuart Faurchild At least the last three have been pretty good. But those prior 4 huge misses are some of the small reasons this rebuild was necessary. Very little in the pipeline after the ’14 draft and ’14 season.
