The Cincinnati Reds have made a flurry of roster moves today. The team called up Phillip Ervin and Chad Wallach from Triple-A Louisville. To create room on the roster the team placed Jesse Winker on the disabled list and Stuart Turner went to the paternity leave list as he and his wife are expecting.

Jesse Winker was placed on the disabled list with a left hip flexor strain. In 30 games this season with the Reds the just turned 24-year-old outfielder is hitting .297/.400/.500. In his 87 plate appearances he’s walked 13 times and struck out just 15 times.

Phillip Ervin returns to the Reds, taking over the spot that Winker was holding down. At the big league level it’s tough to say that he’s not having an outstanding start to his career. We’re talking about just 12 total plate appearances, but he’s got an OPS of 1.783 in that span with two walks and one strikeout. I would still expect to see Ervin see limited playing time, but hopefully Bryan Price will find a way to use him a little bit more like he did the last time he was on the roster, instead of like he was used the previous two times that he was called up.

With Stuart Turner heading to the paternity list the Reds have added catcher Chad Wallach to the 40-man roster and brought him up to Cincinnati. If and when he appears in a game it will be his Major League debut. He’s spent the entire season with the Louisville Bats where he has hit .226/.280/.398 on the season.

Overall, his season line leaves a lot to be desired. He’s struggled at the plate this season, without question. However, he has been hitting well in August – posting a .327/.365/.571 line. In 13 games played he’s hit six doubles and two home runs. Wallach had 11 extra-base hits entering the month.

    Congrats to Chad!

Kudos to Walt Jocketty and staff for the Latos for Disco and Wallach trade. Two major leaguers for a guy who I believe is out of baseball. Even with Disco’s health issues, still a major win for the Redlegs. His Latos for Disco/Wallach and Simon for Suarez/Crawford moves have been some of his brightest highlights.

Now, if the Reds can lock up Suarez…

Time to see some serious time by Suarez at SS, Senzel is hopefully coming very soon and once with the Reds 3B could be his for years.

Wallach is not a major leaguer, he will be jettisoned from the 40 man roster quickly.

I can’t imagine Wallach is a guy they want to keep on the 40 this fall

First of Winker having an injury that I have heard of. When did this happen? Is it very serious?

We talked to him Wednesday and he was fine, said “good.”

Winker looked a little weird coming out of the batter’s box last night. Probably a recurring thing that needs to calm down. You have to figure he was playing thru it so as not to miss his big opportunity. hard to blame him.

The Reds are finally developing a strong bench. And that should make them a lot more competitive going forward. Now the Reds need to unload some of those pitchers that really aren’t cutting it (Adleman …) and then they will have something to smile about.

Adleman might end up a good reliever. He has faced 35 batters as a reliever this year and they are hitting .171 against him. As a starter he seemed good the first time though the lineup.

Philip Ervin is going to burn a trail between Cincy and L-ville….Congrats to all.

Going to need to make another move as Bats down to one catcher. Even though he is on Daytona roster I thought I saw Jose Duarte in Dayton last night but did not see him at breakfast this morning for the bus trip to Great Lakes.Could be the guy.

Reds should really consider finding more playing time for E Suarez at SS (and staying true with what they previously reported as Senzel should be on his way to the Reds shortly and possibly starting at 3B in 2018) and even though I think what Gennett has done this year has been superlative, Peraza has more upside and has actually out hit him by +.100 BA in the past month. All Peraza needed was a wake-up call, as he has all the talent in the world as he proved last year. He just needed a push.

    • Shamrock

Peraza has no business being on a MLB roster next year. He already had his shot..

I noticed Heatherly is now on the Billings roster. It would be nice to see him and Greene in Dayton early next year.

Wallach over Rob Brantley? Why? Brantley has had a good season…Wallach pretty much hasn’t. Is it just age (25vs28)?

    • David

Brantly is no longer in the Reds’ organization. He is a White Sox’ farmhand now.

    • James K

Brantley hasn’t been on the Louisville roster for some time now

Why aren’t more teams talking about the Reds offense? We have the potential to have 5 guys hit 30 homers this season in Votto, Duvall, Suarez, Schebler, and Gennett. I don’t think that has ever been done before has it?
