There’s not a ton going on in minor league or even Major League Baseball right now. Free agency has been incredibly slow on both sides. The Reds have made a handful of minor league free agent signings. They have made just one big league signing, but that’s been the case for a lot of teams around baseball. No player has yet to sign a contract that has been for longer than three seasons.

Major League spring training starts in less than six weeks. Pitchers and catchers report on February 13th. Position players are due in on the 18th. The first game is just a few days later on the 23rd. There will be plenty of minor leaguers in big league camp. Those who aren’t on the 40-man or get a non-roster invitation the report date is February 28th for pitchers and catchers. It’s March 6th for the position players. So if you are going to be out in Goodyear early on, make your way to the back fields and check in on the minor league guys. I’m looking to book my hotel later this week for Goodyear/Phoenix.

Back in October it seemed that the Cincinnati Reds were on the verge of adding a new affiliate in Greeneville, Tennessee. The affiliate would be in the Appalachian League and would be treated as a team between the Arizona League Reds and Billings Mustangs. That was three months ago and the deal still isn’t official. Speaking with a source I’ve been told that there is one thing still being discussed that seems to be the last thing that needs to be done before things can be finalized.

If you missed it on New Years Day, word came out that Pat Kelly will be taking over as manager of the Triple-A Louisville Bats. For now, that’s the only managerial/coaching news we have. But, we should know the others within the next week or two.

One final note is that The Unnamed Reds Podcast was approved by iTunes. So you can now subscribe over there if you’d like. A new episode should be out tomorrow afternoon/evening. If things go as they did last week, the Reds will make a move an hour after we finish recording.

Still looking for a name for your podcast? How about “Gray Matter” or “Gray Matters.”

I live down here near Greeneville, and the sticking point is a lease with Tusculum College for their baseball stadium. The Reds own the franchise rights for a team in the Appalachian League, so if the stadium lease doesn’t get resolved, then they can move the team to another town down here. The Reds have the leverage in the negotiations.

Got to be tough on the organizational staff trying to prepare, sell season tickets, or order things for a souvenir shop with new logos. At least they do not start until June.

Lee, do you know if any of the former staff is still in place or will they be starting from scratch?

MK, that I have no knowledge of. I will say this about the situation as far as the location the team will go if Greeneville doesn’t work out: there are not any other towns down here without a team that would have a stadium even close to as nice as the one in Greeneville. Also, when the Astros were here, they led the Appy League in attendance almost every year. This area down here is half Reds, half Braves country. A Reds affiliate down here will be fantastic. I live 5 minutes from the Cardinals stadium, 15 from the Twins, 25 from the Pirates, 30 from the Mets, and hopefully 40 from our Reds. Gonna be a great summer following the team around!
