Well, I’m on my way back home to Cincinnati, but it’s a 30-hour drive, so I’m going to try and keep this short for the morning. Earlier this week I reported that Taylor Trammell was nursing a quad injury, but that it wasn’t serious. It was keeping him out of games, though. On Saturday morning he was in the cage and taking batting practice. On Saturday afternoon he was in the game, and playing in center field for the Daytona Tortugas squad. In his final at-bat of the day he tripled off of the center field wall and made it look easy.

Here’s the video of a round of his batting practice and the triple.

Also, the Reds acquired Robin(son) Leyer from the White Sox. Jon Heyman was the first to report it. I actually watched him pitch on Saturday for a few batters. Fastball was 92-94 on the day. I’m not sure if I got any video of him or not, but I don’t believe that I did.

Last season he pitched in Double-A for the White Sox. He had 62 strikeouts and 33 walks (4 IBB) in 58.1 innings with a 3.55 ERA. That was easily the best strikeout rate of his career. But, his walk rate was also quite a bit higher than you would like to see. You can see his career stats here.

That’s all I’ve got for the morning. I need to sleep so I can get on the road and start driving in the morning. Have a good Sunday.

I wonder what the Reds had to give up to get leyer. Any word on that?

Reds continue to collect left-handed minor league relievers as they signed former Mets farmhand Kevin Canelon.

Not bad. Looks like he was a slow developer. Mostly was a starter until this past season. Now in the bullpen, he might be able to rise more quickly. Doesn’t walk many, so-so on HR’s allowed. He might be able to start out AA.

The Reds have optioned to Louisville IF Alex Blandino and LHP Cody Reed; reassigned to minor league camp C Tony Cruz, IF/OF Brandon Dixon and IF/OF Sebastian Elizalde; released OF Ben Revere. There are 30 players remaining in Major League spring training camp. This from Jamie Ramsey.

Thankfully that Cruz rumor was not true. Very unfortunate for Blandino and Dixon. Hopefully they are up later.

Reed and Blandino to AAA, Elizalde, Dixon, and Cruz to minors. Gosselin and Quackenbush make the team. What a craptastic bench the Reds have assembled from MLB castoffs.

Nate, do you think it’s possible they could be playing the service time game with Dixon and Blandino instead of throwing them on the bench now… Or just keeping them fresh as a back up every day player?

      • Colt Holt

If DW is playing a service time game with Dixon and Blandino, he is missing the point.

      • Norwood Nate

No. There’s absolutely no need to play service time games with either of those two. One wasn’t even protected for Rule 5, one looks like a future utility or platoon player. Even making the opening day roster doesn’t guarantee they aren’t optioned later in the season, which at least one probably would have been to open a spot for Senzel when he’s ready.

craptastic? mind if I borrow that word? describes my wife’s attitude at times…

I don’t like this bench. Fine with Mez, Pennington, and 4th OF, but I don’t get the need for Gosselin and why Ervin gets to rot on the bench. Not a lot of punch there and the lineup could be dreadful against LH pitching. Someone is going to have to come off the 40 to make room for Quackenbush. Disco to the 60 day DL maybe?

Everyone is reporting Gosselin, Pennington, Quakenbush and now Nicolino have been added. Trent is saying 39 players, I get 41. Am I missing something?

Reading reds.com, I believe the bullpen will be:

    Iglesias
    Hughes
    Peralta
    Garrett
    Nicolino
    Brice
    Weiss
    Quakenbush

Not being performance, but by roster limitations.

    There are no available options.

    Mella
    Reyes
    Lopez
    Stephens
    Stephenson
    Reed

    All optioned.

    Finnegan
    Lorenzen
    Shackleford
    Desclafani

    All on DL.

Hernandez is on the bubble for the DL, I bet they don’t chance it. DL.

Very boring bench. Price wanted Ervin for his speed. Don’t think that will make a difference. Per Price, Gosselin will give us good PH at bats. Huh? Dixon and Blandino sound better to me. I don’t get it, who is the pop off the bench? Pennington, Gosselin, Ervin?

I watched this video and his swing reminded me of someone Trammel reminds me of a young Barry Bonds in Pittsburgh……Just the way he loads up in his swing and explodes
