Jonathon Mayo of milb.com wrote an article on the top 10 names to know in the Florida State League and Drew Stubbs came in at #8. Here is what he had to say:

8. Drew Stubbs, OF
Sarasota Reds (Cincinnati)

Want to see a guy who really can go get ‘em in center? Then Stubbs (Photo:MWLguide.com) might be your guy. Even though he was banged up last year, he still managed to swipe 23 bases. When healthy, that should improve. He’s got raw power to spare and even the larger parks in the FSL won’t hold him if he starts to realize his potential in that area. He does swing and miss quite a bit, though he’ll also draw some walks along the way. Even more encouraging for Sarasota fans is that he raised his batting average 33 points in the second half of last season and made some adjustments that enabled him to cut down that K rate quite a bit. If that’s a springboard, Reds fans could be in for quite a treat.

Sounds a lot like how I feel about Stubbs. I really think this is his year to make some noise. Time will tell, but the season starts in just over a week.

  1. I’m a big fan of Stubbs potential. His strikeouts worry me quite abit, but everything else in his arsenal is outstanding. He must put the bat on the ball alittle more if he is going to meet his potential. This will be a telling year for him. If he does well at Sarasota, he will be in Chatt. the second half of the year. In Chatt. he’ll determine if he can consistantly hit good pitching or not.

  2. I figure Stubbs is likely to split time this season as well between Sarasota and Chattanooga.

  3. Doug:

I hope you’re right. I’ve never thought it was a good idea to draft Stubbs, but I hope that he proves me wrong. Maybe his choking up technique will turn him around. Did his power numbers decrease as his contact when up?

Over the last dozen or so seasons, the Reds have had their share of high strikeout hitters. As a fan, nothing is more frustrating that watching guys whiff.

  4. It actually was the highest isolated power month he had all season, although he barely beat out the previous month. Thats the question I have…. did choking up on the bat help, or did he start to figure things out that coincided with the choking up (because he best OPS month was the month before he began choking up).

  5. Greetings I’m new here
