Bailey sent to Louisville
It finally happened yesterday. Shouldn’t have really been a surprise to anyone, but there are some interesting things from Wayne Krivksy about it this morning on XM Radio. Wayne said that the Reds had Bailey (Photo: Brita Meng Outzen/MLB.com) working on specific things during the spring, including his mechanics (which was talked about a lot). Other things were his slider and his cutter. The Reds and Bailey discussed what that he needed to work on in AAA.
Louisville keeps winning
Louisville only has a few losses this spring and kept their winning ways going yesterday on the back of a strong start by Matt Maloney. The big lefty allowed 4 hits and a walk in 5 shutout innings while striking out 5 batters. Jay Bruce led the hitting attack with an RBI triple. Ryan Hanigan and Jerry Gil also had RBI doubles. Luis Bolivar also had an RBI in the game.

What is the rotation looking like in Louisville? I assume it would be Bailey and Maloney at the top but thats all i can figure. If Gil, Bruce, and Dickerson are starting in the outfield, what becomes of Drew T Anderson? With Coutlangus, McBeth, Ramirez, and Majewski it looks like Lousiville will have a good bullpen. Personally, I cant wait to see how these minor league rosters sort themselves out. I find it encouraging to see Dickersons, Janishes, and Gils in Lousiville as opposed to the usual cast of minor league free agents.

Kyle,
Its going to be interesting to see the outfield situation with all of those guys. As for the rotation, I figure Bailey, Maloney, Shearn, Gardner and Belisle are the 5 starters in Louisville.

What do you think?
Louisville-you already mentioned
Chattanooga-Fisher, Lecure, Avery, Mallet, (who else)
Sarasota-Wood, Thompson, Watson (or is he relief now?), Ondrusek, (who else?)
Dayton-Webb, Smith, ?, ?, ?
What do you have?
Thursday, 27. March 2008
Thompson was optioned to AA when the Reds cut him so I think hes a lock for their rotation if that helps any. And I would look for Rafael Gonzalez in Sarasota’s rotation.
Doug: Where do you see Scott Carroll starting at?
Could you see Jason Bour starting out at Sarasota since Mesoraco would figure to get most of the starts at catcher in Dayton and he hit well in Billings?
Thursday, 27. March 2008
Adam,
I don’t really know much on the Sarasota end other than Wood and Thompson are both there for now. I would imagine Webb and Carroll join them in the rotation and maybe Rafael Gonzalez. For Dayton I figure Kyle Lotzkar is there, as for the rest of it, I have no clue.
Kyle,
I think both of them could be in Dayton thanks to the DH in the league. They could both get plenty of at bats while getting ample time at catcher.

Doug,
Pondering Louisville’s roster, I got to wondering about Guevara. Doesn’t look as if he’s going to make it in S.D. Has he come back yet? will he? if so, where do you see him? Also, any take on Capellan’s fate? Is it possible the Brad Salmon deal was to get somebody to pass through to the Red Sox? Could Guevara be headed there?
Thursday, 27. March 2008
No clue about Guevara, have not heard anything about him yet. I doubt the Reds wouldn’t take him back.
I doubt Capellan makes the team just because there is no room on the roster for him. In years past I think he would have been kept, but this year there just isn’t room as the Reds actually have a lot of talent.
Not really sure if something is being worked out through the Reds to the Sox…. time will tell on that one I guess.

Guevara is on the 15-day DL for the Padres. (He might even be injured, LOL)

Doug:
Do you think that Thompson starting in Sarasota is as bad as Frazier starting in Dayton? I was thinking that Cozart, Soto, and Frazier would kind of juggle between second, short, and third. But I could just as easily see Soto starting in ESP.
Just out of curiosity, do you do much draft coverage?
Thursday, 27. March 2008
i meant to put DH where i put third.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Kyle,
I don’t really think its as bad. Thompson was good in Sarasota, but he really got lit up by the home run ball in a league that really surpresses home runs. He had the 2nd highest HR per fly ball rate in the entire league last year. I don’t really have a problem with him going to Sarasota to start out the year. If he pitches well for April, bump him up to AA.
It sounds like Cozart might actually start the year on the DL…. we will see that one shortly.
As for the draft coverage, I dabble in it a little bit. Whenever there are mock drafts I will always post them and if a player is mentioned anywhere with the Reds showing interest I will post what I have on that player.
Rick,
You are right, I just read that he is having hamstring problems…. sounds like its a legit injury, not something to just hide him.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Who do you like for the Reds in this draft? I kind of like Tanner Scheppers from Fresno State and Christian Friedrich from Eastern Kentucky.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Well, its still really early….. but I would love any of the Smoak, Alvarez, Matsutz, Crow or Beckham to fall to us. Frierich looks good, but I haven’t seen him play so he isn’t fully on my radar yet. Same goes for Scheppers. Hopefully I will get a chance to see them as the season progresses.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Alvarez, Matsutz, Beckham and Crow are unfortunately already lined up to be the first four picks. Baseball America said the Reds are unlikely to take a first baseman that cant move off of the position. You should check out Friedrich and Scheppers. They both have ideal pitchers frames. Scheppers has a mid nineties fastball and a sharp slider. Friedrich has a low 90s fastball and the best curve in the draft.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Funny things happen though and its still early in the season. The best players don’t always go #1,2 or 3…. if someone drops for signability and its going to take 4 million to sign someone at our spot but they are worth the money, I would love to see it happen. That doesn’t even taken into account any high school kids who have barely begun playing. Sometimes guys go from 2nd or 3rd round guys to top tier guys in their SR year (think Kershaw and Bruce for examples on that one). There is still a lot to go down before we really know who could go where.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Thats a good point. I remember thinking that the Reds reached for Bruce in 2005. I had wanted the Reds to take Jacoby Ellsbury at the time. I guess I was wrong there. In 2006 I wanted the Reds to take Lincecum but I probably wasn’t alone there. Last year I was hoping that they would pick Blake Beavan. Time will tell with that one.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Back in 2006 I wanted Rowell real bad. Wasn’t sold on Lincecum in the sense that his control was awful and his size, even now, scares me. Last year, I didn’t really have anyone I was ‘targeting’ just because we were further back in the draft. I know when we went on the clock I was saying ‘just pay Porcello!’ but I knew they wouldn’t based on the rumors of what he was asking for.
Friday, 28. March 2008
I feel stupid for underestimating Joba Chamberlain. I just thought he was an overweight college pitcher destined to be a set up man. I would have loved to see Porcello picked as well but his contract really isnt reasonable. I generally favor college players early in the draft unless they are a slam dunk high schooler like the Uptons and Porcello.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Don’t feel bad about Joba…. I thought the same exact thing. Thats just real good scouting by the Yankees. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the other guys. I still wouldn’t sign Porcello to the contract he signed, because of the MLB contract, but if he wanted just the 6 or 7 million or whatever it was and a regular contract, I would have paid him that. My draft philosophy is just take the best player that you can sign. High school, junior college, college…. doesn’t matter to me. Just take the guy your scouts say have the best chance of being the best player.
Friday, 28. March 2008
I used to like only college players in the draft because I read moneyball in middle school and fell in love with it. i had taken to heart the idea that college guys were safe picks and highschoolers never panned out. then i realized that I was only reading half of the argument. now im about 60-40 college players all things equal. Now i take moneyball to be more about finding flaws in the market and exposing them. if college players get overvalued just take the highschooler. if homers are overrated, go for defense.
Friday, 28. March 2008
Today I am more HS than college in the draft because with the money kids can get coming out of HS now, the best 18 year old talents in North America are generally skipping college for the paycheck.
Of course its still a pick by pick basis, but in general I like high school kids just a little bit more than college kids.
Saturday, 29. March 2008
Thats a good point. Im generally more conservative and college players just seemed to be more polished. It seems to me that most of the high school talent worth taking is confined to the first 20 picks. I was also disheartened by high school players like Howington, Gruler, Espinosa, etc.
Saturday, 29. March 2008
Blame that on bad luck and Jim Bowden.
Saturday, 29. March 2008
What is worse, choosing Gruler over Kazmir or trading Kazmir for Zambrano?
Saturday, 29. March 2008
trading Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. At the time Kazmir was in AA and you knew he was legit. Then you traded him for 2 months of Victor freakin’ Zambrano. Good call….. not. Mets still have to be kicking themselves for that one.
Sunday, 30. March 2008
Probably the most short sighted deal ever. I wonder if it is possible for one deal to torpedo Phillips’s career in front offices.
Sunday, 30. March 2008
I don’t know if one move killed his career, but its one he isn’t likely to ever live down thats for sure.
