Great roundup.
Can I use HTML? Let’s see:
Love that performance by Bailey, I’m so glad that AAA keeps track of pitchcounts. Has that filtered down to AA yet?
Nice-looking AA debut for Daryl Thompson. Feels like forever he’s been stuck in single-A.
Todd “Hi, I’m in Dayton” Frazier looks as if he’s in control, only made one out at the bat all day.
<Wow, lots of good debuts, they just keep coming: how about that box-score line for Juan Francisco? Wow. And he stole home? I didn’t even know he had any speed in his game - blinded by all the homers, I guess.
And not to leave out Drew Stubbs, too. Nice start on your call for a breakout season.

Its good to know that Frazier can take a walk. Do you think he was getting pitched around at all? All around it seems like opening day was good to the Reds. Gotta give Francisco props for getting three doubles off of a major league pitcher.

Hey guys,
Was at the L’ville game yesterday. Homer had very good control and was indeed pitch efficient. He also broke at last 4 bats, which tells you there was some sort of mustard on his stuff. He wasn’t dominant, though–only 2 ks, and he gave up some very loud outs and foul balls. But good.
Jay Bruce, on his 21st b’day, got punched out with ease by a good, hard-throwing lefthander in David Pursey (he looked great). Jay’s either still a little spring groggy or he’s got some work to do against hard-throwing lefties. He was well behind on Pursey’s fastball.
I hope Camilo Vasquez and Carlos Fisher do well in their moves to the ‘pen, but I kind of wonder why they’re being moved, frankly. Know anything?

Also, Sean Watson’s back in the pen! Surprising to me.

Does anyone have a report on Jeffords’ repetoire?

DA,
you should be able to use at least some html in the replies. I listened to the Chattanooga game. They didn’t make note of how hard he was throwing, but the announcers (Montgomery, because for some reason the home broadcast was not working) were gushing about how he might be one of the best pitchers they see all year and the fact that he wasn’t a top 30 prospect in the Reds system was a little crazy. Francisco, who the Fort Meyers announcers were also gushing over (Chattanooga started after the Sarasota game so I was listening to it for about an hour), had a great game. All 3 of his doubles came off of Francisco Liriano, which makes it even better.
Kyle,
not too sure if Frazier was getting pitched around, but I doubt it. Its early. Frazier has a real strong understanding of the zone, so if the pitcher was trying to nibble it wasn’t going to work against him.
Larry,
Thanks for the word on the Louisville game. Bruce still has some work to do against lefties, but most 21 year old lefties do. The fastball isn’t something he usually struggles against for lefties, so my guess is that its April 3rd on that one. As for Bailey, I am not too worried about his results right now. I am worried about his health and his improvements in his control. If he keeps those things going in the right direction thats all that matters over the next few months. They will eventually lead to the results we all want to see.
As for Fisher to the pen, its likely because he broke down the second half of last year and has good enough stuff that he can really succeed out of the bullpen. Vazquez….. not so sure whats going on with his move.
Buster,
Not too sure on what Jeffords is throwing yet. Sometimes until late round picks start playing its tough to get info on them.

Doug, do you have an area where you keep the depth chart of the minor league teams? I’m most interested in the starting rotations for each club. Who are the REDS giving the starts to at each level ongoing through the season. If a pitcher can dominate for 10-12 starts, you have to look at moving him up, provided there’s someone that can be moved down or up or to the pen to make room for him.

KP,
I don’t have a depth chart just yet. Each team’s rotation isn’t exactly out yet and injuries have already messed with Daytons (Matt Klinker was set in the rotation but tweaked something in a warm up session and is now on the DL). I think moving someone up all depends on why they are dominating. Generally it doesn’t matter, but if you have a starter out there dominating low A throwing 90% fastballs…. you might want to hold him back still and tell him he needs to start mixing in his other stuff.
