Juan Duran could play this year
Ben Badler at Baseball America says that Juan Duran (Photo creating by reader Tom) could spend some time in the GCL this year, but right now is dealing with an elbow injury. The GCL uses a DH, so getting at bats shouldn’t be a problem.
Peek at the Draft
Jim Callis, also of Baseball America does a brief little rundown of who/why the Reds should draft in June. He eventually comes to the point where he thinks they end up with a right handed pitcher at #7.
Opening Week of the Minors
The opening week is now over after 4 games for the teams. All of the teams are 2-2 except Dayton who fell to 1-3 in the opening week. There were some guys who had real good weeks. Drew Stubbs (who I plan on writing something on this week) leads the FSL in walks after 1 week. Juan Francisco has a nice even 1.000 OPS. Tom Shearn and Tyler Pelland took a no hitter into the final inning of a double header before Ricky Stone allowed a hit. Todd Frazier has a 6-1 walk to strikeout ratio and is boasting a 1.316 OPS. BJ Szymanski has absolutely killed the ball so far this year with a double, triple and 2 HR in just 12 at bats. Daryl Thompson made a strong debut for Chattanooga with 6 innings and 5 strikeouts. Jerry Hairston and Jolbert Cabrera have killed the ball down in Louisville as both have OPS’s over 1.100. Homer Bailey walked just 1 batter in 7 innings in the season opener and threw just 83 pitches.

Szymanski probably needs a good year to continue in the organization. I was kind of surprised he was moved up this year. I know the team has a sizeable of money invested in him, but the last two years, he’s been terrible.

Yeah, I was also pretty surprised to see Szymanski moved to AA. I figured they had maybe moved to the ‘he is a 4th outfielder’ and was there to be the speed/power off the AA bench. Guess that was wrong.

Anybody seen Szymanski? Is he doing something different? What a terrific thing it would be if he has a breakout.

When Chattanooga gets home to play I will be able to get some more information on what he is doing, but until then I have got nothing.

I would absolutely love for Tim Beckham to fall to the Reds in the draft. Not likely to happen but he is the one position player I have been keeping an eye on. I dont know why Callis thinks Catcher isnt a position we would consider. With the dearth of catching prospects throughout baseball I would not be apposed to the Reds taking another one. As for pitchers, any of the ones he mentioned would do. I like the name Shooter Hunt, we could have a future rotation with a Homer & a Shooter. =)

It wouldn’t seem wise to draft back to back high school catchers in consecutive drafts. However, if Buster Posey proves to be the most valuable non boras guy at number 7, i don’t see why the Reds shouldn’t take him. He would probably leap frog Mesoraco . When you start David Ross, Javier Valentin, and Paul Bako at the big league level, i dont see a problem with stock piling talented catchers. But consider that the Reds wont pick again until the third round.
That being said, i like Tanner Scheppers the most right now at number 7.

Ron,
I don’t think a team would take catchers in back to back drafts in the first round simply because there isn’t room to play such a guy, college or not.
Tuesday, 8. April 2008
I was thinking that a college guy (Posey) could start next season at Sarasota with Mesoraco in Dayton. I would hate to see the Reds not take the best player available. That came back to haunt the Blue Jays in 2005.

Is that really Duran? My goodness he has a tall head.
Tuesday, 8. April 2008
Yeah, thats really him. He is a real big kid. Can’t wait to see him play in probably 2 years lol.

Im all for BPA, catcher or no catcher. I agree its not a probably, but if no one left on your board rates out as value, you gotta take the value player. But there is two months before the draft, there will be a lot more jostling around of player’s rankings between now and then. If I remember right, at this point last year Meseraco wasnt even considered a 1st rounder. A great summer propelled him … I am sure that will hold true again for a couple of guys.

Ron,
I always go BPA, but I don’t think a catcher will be that guy. There are always a few guys who rocket up the charts with a strong senior HS season. Jay Bruce, Devin Mesoraco and Clayton Kershaw were all 2nd-3rd round types heading into their senior seasons and all went in the first half of the first round.
