Louisville lost 11-5. Box Score
- Jay Bruce went 4-5 with a run, RBI and a stolen base (2).
- Jolbert Cabrera went 2-4 with a run and a walk.
- Drew Anderson (OF) went 1-4 with a triple.
- Jerry Gil went 2-5 with a double and 2 RBI.
- Chris Kroski went 2-4.
- Matt Maloney allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in 4.1 innings. His outing wasn’t that bad though. One of those hits was a pop up that should have been caught but since the fielder lost it in the lights it went as a hit. His curveball looked for the most part tonight and his fastball was well located. His slider was off an on and his change up looked real good.

I know you haven’t seen a lot of Maloney, but what are your initial thoughts? Do you see him as a possible starter in the majors?
Thanks,
Buster

Stubbs seems to be hitting so far. Given his age, I’d assume he will need to jump up a level mid-year to stay on schedule. Or no?
Nice to see that Bruce guy swinging the stick a bit better. What did that take, a couple days before he was on fire?
What would you do with Belisle? He seems to be healthy and, although it’s against minor leaguers, seems to be throwing pretty well. Long relief with the Reds or are you one of those who has given up on Matt?

Random thoughts:
1) I’m not convinced Stubbs is the real deal until he does it at AA. An argument can be made that the level of competition in college and the level of competition at AA are very similar. So it’s not that impressive that Stubbs can hit at high A. That said, I’m rooting for the guy, he doesn’t need to hit *that* well to make the majors because of his D and speed. Anyone know if this kid can bunt for basehits? Seems a logical thing to do given how fast he is.
2) Obviously it’s extremely early, but the Hamilton-Volquez trade is looking good so far, considering Patterson is outproducing JH. Though, I do have concerns that Volquez has basically no breaking ball.
3) Doug keep up the great great work. This site is a godsend.

Buster,
I think Maloney could be a starter in the majors…. although with what I have seen, its likely as a #4 at best. He doesn’t have over powering stuff and if he isn’t locating his stuff, he isn’t going to succeed much. I like his curve and his changeup though. His Slider doesn’t do much for me and his fastball isn’t too impressive either, but he does locate it which is always good. I want to see him pitch some more though.
Jeff,
First, whenever I leave a comment on your site, it doesn’t work. Don’t know if its going to the spam filter or what, but they aren’t showing up. As for Stubbs, I think he spends the second half in Chattanooga unless he tanks. Bruce is good. I didn’t get to see him while he was slumping because those games weren’t available on milb.tv, so I can’t say why he was slumping. He has looked good from what I have been able to see since then though. Belisle is a tough one. I certainly haven’t given up on him, but I think the Reds are content with their rotation and thus far the bullpen has been strong. I really think Belisle could have some success out of the pen, but I would probably keep him in AAA as a starter for now on ‘rehab’ and if someone in the bullpen struggles or Josh Fogg implodes, bring him up.
Kevin,
Some work has been done, and for the most part, college is about the equivalent of Low A. Sometimes better, sometimes worse depending on who you are playing. I am interested to see Stubbs play in person again now that he is healthy, but that probably won’t happen until at least next year. The thing that I want to see Stubbs do is hit better than he did last year despite being a level higher. That would suggest he is learning and thats what its all about with him at the plate.
As far as Volquez goes…. the best change ups in baseball are from guys like Hamels and Santana. While those guys are both lefties, they don’t throw a breaking ball more than 5-10 times a game. When you have a good fastball (and Volquez has a better FB than either of those guys) and a plus plus change up, you don’t truly need anything else but a ’show me’ pitch once or twice and inning.
