Baseball America tabs 2 Reds in this weeks Hot Sheet

Baseball America unveils its ‘Prospect Hot Sheet‘ every Friday this year and taps into who the hottest players in the minor leagues are. The Reds, featuring one of the best systems in baseball have landed two prospects on the first Hot Sheet of the year.

Dayton 3B Todd Frazier comes in at #3 on the list

  • So far Todd is hitting .476/.621/1.190 through the first week. He has been simply incredible thus far.

Louisville Bats RHP Homer Bailey comes in at #4 on the list

  • Bailey is 1-0 with a 0.71 ERA, 2 walks, 9 strikeouts and 9 hits in 12.2 innings pitched.

One guy that I fully expected to see on there and was shocked when he wasn’t was Daryl Thompson (Photo: Tim Evearitt/The Chattanoogan). So far this year he is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 1 walk, 13 strikeouts and just 5 hits allowed in 12 innings. I will be asking about him in the chat, so hopefully it gets answered as far as if he was in consideration and close, because with numbers like that its tough to be overlooked, but I think he was.

  1. I am in the chat too but havent gotten anything answered yet, I asked how close Waring was to making the list along with Frazier.

I talked to JJ Cooper and he said that with two Reds on the list it was really hard to add another. He said Waring and Francisco were both talked about though when people brought their guys up for the Hot Sheet.

  3. That makes sense for Bailey and Frazier to get the nod over Thompson/Francisco/Waring since the are more highly regarded. I also asked where Thompson was. For some reason basbeall america isnt very high on him.
Do you think that Frazier would be playing 3rd base right now if it wasn’t for Waring and Francisco?

    Kyle,
honestly I think BA is not down on him as much as they are questioning whether he can keep it up over a full season…. or at least a long period of time. I mentioned how hard Thompson was throwing in the last start and it was the hardest JJ had heard reports on him throwing ever. Now while I do think the gun in Chattanooga is a little juiced (had Cueto hit 99 at one point last year), a 97 MPH on that gun is still probably 94 or 95, which is as hard if not a little harder than he has thrown pre surgery.

As for Frazier, I think if Waring weren’t there and Cozart were healthy then Frazier would be at 3B. For now, he is just going to spend some time at SS until he must move off.

    Doug,
Is there any hope that Frazier will stick at Short?

  6. Is there a chance, sure. Is there a chance he sticks and can play good defense? Not really. He just isn’t quick enough off the bat to play SS. His range isn’t very good.

  7. Doug-

If possible you should do an article on the Reds’ top 10 relief pitchers thoroughout their system.

    Thanks

  8. That might be something I would do in the future, but right now its fairly early in the season…. off the top of my head, I would probably rank the top 10 relievers like this:

    1. Josh Roenicke
    2. Pedro Viola
    3. Tyler Pelland
    4. Sean Watson
    5. Carlos Fisher
    6. Marcus McBeth
    7. Derrik Lutz
    8. Ramon Ramirez
    9. Ramon Geronimo
    10. Danny Herrera

    Something like that.

  9. I have always thought that ranking minor league relievers is kind of pointless. Most of the major league relievers were starters in the minor leagues. Technically, I think Burton might still count on lists. Im guessing hed slot in at #2.

I don’t know how Burton made some list. He certainly was on the 25 man roster long enough last year to still qualify for the list.

It looks like Maloney and Thompson could get flip-flopped unless things change. Hopefully, Maloney has a fixable mechanical problem and has not ceiling’d out. I’m not expecting a change for a month or so.

  12. I think Burton fell right under the 50 inning threshold last year.

He did Kyle, but the ROY rules are something like 50ip, 150 AB and or X number of days on the 25 man roster. He had to have been on the 25 man roster long enough to not qualify this year.
