  1. Wow! What has gotten into Janish?! Looks like he wants to be the “ss of the future”.

  2. Its good to see Dickerson heating up. Montano is really impressing. Maybe its time to move him up since he is 23 already. Kel Jones might just accompany him.
Seeing Cozart and Janish hit seems like a very good thing. How much does Cozart have to hit to be a top ten prospect? If I had to run off a top ten right now it would be:
    Jay Bruce
    Johnny Cueto
    Homer Bailey
    Joey Votto
    Drew Stubbs
    Todd Frazier
    Devin Mesoraco
    Juan Francisco
    Josh Roenicke
    Juan Duran
-Daryl Thompson, Chris Valaika, Matt Maloney, and Kyle Lotzkar wouldn’t be far off.

I was looking at Dayton’s stats and it looks like they have a three headed monster in the pen with Del Rosario, Jeffords and Krebs.
    The y have combined for a 5-2 rec 6Sv 44.2IP 32H 5ER 16BB 48K 1.01ERA 1.07WHIP

Does anyone know anything about Montano’s stuff only 14 hits in 28IP 1.27ERA - great start and had a good year in Billings

I believe Montano has been in the system since 2003. He’s pitching Low-A and he should be dominating. Not sure what his upside is at this point and I wonder if he is a candidate to be a Rule 5 pick following this year.

Kyle, considering Cueto and Votto are with the Reds I exclude them from my own personal prospect list. I’d actually have to see Juan Duran play before listing him even in the top 20-30 prospects. Sure, he sounds great but he is only 16 and not even in Rookie League yet. Don’t forget about Travis Wood either. I’d rate him higher than Maloney. Justin Turner and KJones garner some excitement too.

  5. pw,
Yeah, I just hope he keeps hitting. I like Kepp and all, but he isn’t a good defensive SS.

Cozart is going to have to hit for a longer period of time than 6 games to make it in my top 25.

    Kyle,
Votto is no longer a prospect. He has more than 150 AB’s in his career.

    Patrick,
I am not really sure what Montano is throwing, but I will be in Dayton this weekend and will try to see what I can find out.

I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse, but here are my thoughts on the Krivski replacement. Castelini had in mind since way back to get Jocketty into that position and was just looking for an openning. Obviously he’s the owner and that’s his right. I have no respect for Jocketty’s part in the whole thing. Short of needing a right handed bat, Wayne Krivski has done a great job of bringing the Reds back to relavance. Watching Edinson yesterday only punctuates what Kriv is all about. He deserved far better treatment than he received. While I was one of the few that liked Dan O’Brien, he did a nice job of starting the Reds system in the right direction. Kriv continued that. Both had personallities that didn’t bring glory to themselves, but they both understood how to build a farm system. O’brien has some short comings, and Kriv seemed to improve the team in those areas.

Now, I have no idea what Walt Jocketty is going to do, but I hope like heck that he stays the course. Of course if he does that, it will only validate Wayne Krivski. I have NO doubt that the Reds will be contenders if they continue in the direction that Kriv had them going.

Long winded I know, but this is the kind of stuff that makes it very difficult. I will root for WK were ever he ends up. Castelini really blew it here. Also, moving spring training to Arizona is a horrible move, though I understand it.

    Mike

  7. Only thing I would change Mike, is where and how quickly prospects are being promoted. I may be way too impatient when it comes to that aspect, but I think WK was at the other end of the spectrum in that regard. Something in between is whats needed IMO. Players like Stubbs, Roenicki, & Valaika are ready for a bump. I would add Frazier but his defense has been rough this year so far … way too many errors … so he either needs a lot of refining or they need to go ahead and move him to a new position permanently.

  8. Since Votto apparently went over his 130 atbat limit and Cueto and Bailey will get their 50 innings in soon i’ll count them out. I would not be surprised if Jay Bruce finishes the year south of 130 atbats. So with that in mind id go:
Bruce, Stubbs, Frazier, Mesoraco, Francisco, Roenicke, Wood, Lotzkar, Thompson, and Duran. I like Turner and Valaika but im not quite convinced they will be more than utility men in the majors so they would be in the teens. Im assuming that Duran will show enough potential in limited playing time and in instructs that he will merit the #10 ranking. Maloney, Soto, Tatum, Waring, Castro, Phipps, Jordan Smith, and Lecure would probably be in the teens as well.
Overall i think the system will end up at about #10 in the offseason. They lost a lot of quality at the top. Stubbs stepping up and a high first rounder should help some.

  9. Little off topic here but is there any chance the reds trade for Matt Wieters the switch hitting catcher for the Oriols organisation.

  10. Josh,
I don’t think so…. the Orioles would be stupid to trade him (not that they can even trade him yet).

    Ron,
I think Frazier needs to just move to another position, but that is already beginning to happen. With Cozart starting to play in Dayton, Frazier has seen time at 1B and 3B already.

    Doug,

A few weeks ago you asked for suggestions on the blog. Here’s one: An estimated time to majors for each top prospect once every couple weeks. It’s tough to remember how far in the future the best case scenerio for some of the guys like Frazier and Stubbs are.

  12. Thats good to hear Doug, he isnt far from being ready offensively for a move up, as soon as his defense catches up. My question is, does he have the arm for 3rd? If not, Left Field could be his quickest route to the majors. The right side of the Reds infield is set for the next several years so there is no sense in moving him to 2B or 1st.

  13. Yeah, he has the arm for 3B although LF is something that has been speculated for him.
