Per the Dayton Daily News, Todd Frazier was promoted to Sarasota while Devin Mesoraco was promoted to Dayton. Logan Parker will begin his rehab in Dayton as well. Brett Bartles was sent back to extended spring training. Chris Valaika has also been sent to AA Chattanooga.
Its about time if you ask me. Frazier should have started in Sarasota and Valaika doesn’t seem like he should have started in Sarasota with the seasons they have put up to this point. Its also good to see Mesoraco heading to Dayton, hopefully I will get a chance to go up and see him sometime soon. Thats all for now.

We might be seeing Jocketty’s first effect on the farm system with these moves.

I hope that this signals a change in philosophy within the organization. The Reds need to push their top prospects more. You’ll know there’s a change in direction when Louisville has more prospects than career minor leaguers and organizational players on its roster.

I think that in all of baseball AAA is like that. Career minor leaguers and old major leaguers with just a smattering of prospects. It’s just how the system has evolved. AA is the real proving grounds. AAA is usually a short stop, often much less than a season, on the way up to the “show”.
As for holding prospects back, it behooves Jocketty to do so, as it inflates a prospects worth. It’s better to try to trade a prospect hitting .350 in High-A than .250 in AA. I’m actually not sure that Jocketty has much control over the promotions, as the minor league system is really Terry Reynolds’ gig and I bet Walt let’s him do his thing. At least I hope so. Reynolds has been superb since he took over.

Todd Frazier might have to keep doing the 1B/LF/DH gig in Sarasota because Jose Castro was just demoted there according to the minorleaguebaseball website. This also makes it likely that Valaika will be playing short in AA instead of second.

DA,
I don’t think Jocketty had much to do with it. For about three weeks now I have been hearing rumors of something like this.
Kyle,
bummer about Castro. I hadn’t seen he was demoted. He has been real unlucky, as his BABIP is .254 when last year it was .337 and this year he is hitting the same amount of line drives and is walking more and striking out less.

It may be about time they were promoted but I don’t see 5 weeks stunting their long term growth. I hope each one continues to do well.
I’m surprised that no pitchers moved up or down.

I don’t think it stunted their growth, but I am all for starting guys at the right level. Frazier should have started in Sarasota. Valaika and Mesoraco (to a much lesser extent) I get.

I’m suprised Wood and Thompson wernt promoted.

I’m all for it. I like the much more aggressive promotion style and am hoping this is a sign that Jocketty looks on these matters differently from WK, who seemed to me just extraordinarily conservative. Now I’d like to see Cumberland and Strait either play every day or promoted to Louisville.

I think they kept Thompson down because he was due to pitch today and wanted to keep him on schedule. Wood they may be more patient with because of his injury problems last year. Make him prove he can stay healthy for a couple of months before letting him tray a more difficult level. Over all though its about time for some of these guys.

I was supried to see Otterness sent back down to extended from Sarasota. He was almost perfect in the innings pitched while up there. With the current bullpen being below par this season it seems a little out of the ordinary.

Besides Ramon Geronimo, who has been having a spectacular year

I don’t think Jocketty had a thing to do with these moves. Everyone in the organization expected them. Since Day 1, Frazier was going to be promoted quickly and Mesoraco was going to be in Dayton whenever that happened. Thats what I had heard from about the end of the first week of the season. Valaika got the promotion because he was killing the baseball.

Doug and anyone else,
I would be interested in your depth chart at each position, starting from the Reds on down. I have been busy and haven’t been able to put much time into it, but I may throw something out there.
I am happy to see the roster moves, however I’m not bothered with holding back as much as some. The thinking may be to give the kids as much success as possible before they end up somewhere where they will for sure struggle at some point.
I got some inside information that WK had some personallity quirks that didn’t help him, however, he did a great job of picking up where O’Brien left off with the farm system.

All of these promotions were very much deserved. My hope is Frazier is in Chattanooga by the first of August…
Also, very excited to see what Mesoraco does.
