The one thing about Bailey is that he pitches much better on the road than at home. I am wondering if the home fans/media is affecting him. I have read and heard a lot of negative comments about him since his call up last year. Fans calling him a bust and such. Since he was built up to be larger than life people seem to want to cut him down.

Doug
Looks like they have sent Otterness from Sarasota (A) to Dayton. He was just called back from extended to Sarasota (A) on the 25th of this month and gave up no runs again. Is this surprising since he has not given up any runs in all relief appearances with Sarasota? Especially since the bullpen in Sarasota is back and forth right now.

I just noticed that Enerio Del Rosario was also called up to Sarasota. So him and Carroll take the spots vacated by Wood and Smith who take the spots left open by Ramon Ramirez and Thompson. It’s nice to see guys moving up the ladder! Im not sure if Del Rosario is pitching tonight or if it’ll be Gonzalez, but i look forward to seeing him pitch in Sarasota.
It looks like the rotation in is Dayton Matt Klinker, Curtis Partch, Juan Rafael, Josh Ravin, and Luis Montano now.

Any insight on why our pitchers keep getting sold to Korean teams. Shearn was just sold like Lehr. Not that either one was going to make a huge impact but just seems real random.

Patrick,
I was at the Reds game last night and just the people around me were talking about Bailey and the things they were saying were completely inaccurate. I had to correct at least three different stories people were telling about him.
Ian,
Yeah, there has been a ton of movement lately. Its pretty much like Walt said ‘lets get our guys moving and lets do it now’. I like it. I think Wayne Krivsky did a good job, but the one thing I didn’t like was how slow he moved some guys along in the system.
Scott,
Lehr had it in his contract that if a team approached him from Korea the Reds had to let him go. Given his age, its likely his last chance to make a good paycheck and have some money for him and his family for the rest of their lives. Shearn, while I don’t think he had it in his contract is likely under the same circumstances. I really hope both guys do well over there.

What stories about Bailey are wrong? I have heard and read a lot about him too, and it is hard to know what is true. Is it true that he has a bad attitude and won’t chart pitches? Is he really only at best a middle of the rotation starter? Should the Reds trade him ASAP?

Looking only at the numbers, and I admittedly have no other way to look at things, all signs point to the May 5th game against Norfolk for when things went downhill for Bailey this season. Specifically his control. He pitched 112 pitches in that game, not eye-popping, but probably unnecessary for a 22 year old. Before that game, his K/BB ratio was 24:8, after it’s been 15:17. He also got shelled in his next game after that. Now, to be fair, Bailey’s BABIP has increased from .249 in April to .392 in May (not including last nights game). That is to be expected as .249 is way low, and .392 is way high, making his BABIP on the year regress to a normal level. You can’t control BABIP, but you can control, err… control, and he’s not been able to do that this month.
Has he lost the feel for a pitch or pitches? Has he mentally taken himself out of games because he’s frustrated with still being at AAA? Has he been playing injured? Or is it just a random slump?
I’m really hoping it’s not number three, especially since control issues usually indicate elbow problems.

Does Bailey have a bad additude? At times, yeah he does. He doesn’t like stupid questions really, which is why he has had issues with John Fay (who generally asks dumb questions) and Marc Katz (of the DDN, which is why Hal is all over him lately). Katz asked him ‘have you learned anything in Louisville’. That really is a poorly worded question, so Bailey responded with his smart ace comment of ‘no’. I think that had Katz asked him what he has learned in Louisville, the conversation would have gone quite differently. Homer does chart pitches. One story floating around is that he won’t and reads hunting magazines instead. False. Does he read his hunting magazine during the game while charting? Yeah, I have seen that…. in between innings. His upside is still a #1 pitcher and no the Reds shouldn’t try to trade him ASAP. They should call him up and let him pitch for Belisle or out of the bullpen to get him time against major league hitters.

Doug, any new prospect updates on the way?
Read this on ESPN today (Neyer, I think):
“Everybody’s talking about the kids in next week’s draft, but Baseball America points out someone even more interesting: Dominican right-hander Michael Inoa:
Inoa, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound righty, creates easy velocity through relatively sound mechanics. At the workout, Inoa consistently sat at 91-92 mph with his fastball, topping out at 94. He also throws a softer breaking ball which was inconsistent at times, and will also show a splitter. Inoa turns 17 in September. ”
Any chance the Reds are part of this? Would fill the missing 2nd Rounds selection(s) from a monetary standpoint. Could Volq-Cueto-Cordero’s role on the pitching staff play a role in convincing a young man to sign with the Reds over, say, the Yankees/RedSox systems?

Doug, meant to say any new “draft prospect” updates…
Wednesday, 28. May 2008
I don’t think the Reds are in on Iona. I have heard rumors that he is getting big time offers upwards of 4 million bucks. No way the Reds throw that kind of money at him.
Tonight around 6:30 there should be a new Draft Preview up. I have time set aside at 6 to get it done, so it will be up later in the evening.

Doug,
Ken Rosenthal proposed a swap of Adam Dunn for CC Sabathia. Would you do that?

Re Bailey
If he cannot tolerate dumb questions, then he is going to be very frustrated with his career and likely life. It is immaturity if you cannot handle “poorly worded question” that was not particularly poorly worded. As for the mags, I remember getting in alot of trouble at school if I was reading a mag even if I was doing my work like a good boy otherwise. Come on, tell him to grow up. This is meant to be the big leagues not grade school.
Wednesday, 28. May 2008
Chi Reds fan,
It is an immaturity thing. I don’t think the magazine thing is a big deal. Whats the difference if he talks to fans during that time or if he reads a magazine during that time? He needs to grow up some, no doubt though.
Aaron,
I wouldn’t do that deal. We are much more likely to sign Dunn than Captain Cheeseburger after the season. We also don’t have anyone to really replace Dunn with at this point unless you want to play Bruce or Freel over there…. but then your offense does what? I don’t think that move puts the Reds over the top this year, so I don’t see a point in making it.
Wednesday, 28. May 2008
And let us not forget that Homer Bailey is still 22 years old. Jay Bruce and Johnny Cueto are unusually mature for their age. Edinson Volquez and Brandon Phillips were not close to having things figured out at his age. I would expect him to naturally gain a little more maturity as he ages and settles down. I would be patient with him in the process.

It’s nice there is some decent outfielder depth at AA because the Dickerson experiment has got to be over soon. It’s a shame but the kid can’t hit and well he’s not a kid anymore. Those players that look like big leaguers are the hardest to give up on but he’s had enough time.
Wednesday, 28. May 2008
I wouldn’t cut him loose just yet. Drew Anderson is wasting a 40 man roster spot and starting in AAA, and he has a lower BA than Dickerson. I would give Dickerson one more year after this. There aren’t really any other quality outfield prospects in the system besides Stubbs and maybe Cumberland that will make it to AAA any time soon.
Wednesday, 28. May 2008
Kyle,
You are forgetting about Danny Dorn and Sean Henry, both in AA playing well.
