  1. Not a bad debut from Thompson! Doug, how old is this kid and could he be up before Homer or Maloney? Looks to me like if all goes right, the Reds are going to have one fine rotation down the road with Harang, Volquez, Cueto, Thompson, and hopefully Homer. How do you think Maloney and/or Wood fit in? Oh I know…the Reds are going to package 3 of those pitchers to get Josh Hamilton back…right????

  2. Jeff, great points and interesting questions. Doug, could the Reds package Arroyo with some other players (now that he’s pitching well) to bring in a high-level prospect or two? I know, I know, everyone loves EE’s upside and I agree that he has one. However, I would package Arroyo and EE to get a type A prospect. You could then play Keppinger, Hairston, and Freel more often (and they are getting on base) and still have plenty of power with Dunn, Bruce, Phillips, Votto, and even Griffey (who I still think can hit 25 HR). Jocketty has a history, I have read, of packaging multiple players to get one really good one. If that’s so, what players (whether major league or high prospects) would you like to go after? Love to hear your opinion on this. :)

  3. Hey Doug I figured you would get a kick out of this if you haven’t already seen it.

  4. Aaron’s comments about Jocketty’s packaging abilities makes me think of the Mulder trade, and that makes me shiver in fright.

How wrong was I about being concerned with Bruces plate discipline? Through two games, 4 BBs and 0 Ks. Are you kidding me?

  5. Rotoworld mentioned on their website that the Mariners were ‘actively pursuing’ Scott Hatteberg. Do you think that the Reds could get a prospect or two from the Mariners like they did from the Mets last year for Conine?

  6. Jeff,
Thompson is a good prospect, but I think that Bailey or Maloney would get the call before him if the move were needed to be made sometime in the next month at least. I am waiting to hear from some people on Travis Wood’s game last night to see how his stuff looked. I think Wood and Thompson are right there with eachother in terms of prospects, ahead of Maloney at this point. Thompson is 22 until November.

    Aaron,
If I am running the team, I am holding onto Arroyo. We still need pitching and while he is up and down, he is a solid pitcher. As for relying on Hairston and Freel for future plans…. I think that is a tough thing to do. Hairston is playing over his head right now, which is awesome for us, but counting on him to continue it well into the future isn’t the best idea. Freel is what he is…. not an every day guy. Someone I would love to go after at this point in Andy LaRoche of the Dodgers. He had 3B locked up in ST until he was hurt, then Blake Dewitt has taken the job and run with it. I would love to have him on this team, shift EE to left field next year if Dunn isn’t signed or to RF if he is then play LaRoche at 3B. He is someone I would certainly be finding out what it takes to get.

Patrick, I think its funny that some of the comments are taking Hal to task on the constant Bailey ripping. He certainly went out of his way to do it again in this article.

    Kyle,
I don’t think so. The Mets were dumb to give up what they did for Conine and while Bavasi is indeed an idiot, I don’t think he is going to give up what the Mets did for a guy DFA’d.

  7. Little off topic here but how come every mock draft i look at has the reds pasing on Gordan Becham and sighning Aron Crow. Is Jocketty even intrested in signing Becham.

  8. Yea even John Fay today apparently noticed it considering he went out out of his way to apologize for the way he’s been on Bailey in the past.

  9. Doug, I agree that Hairston is playing over his head. However, he has been doing that for a pretty long period of time so far. I mean, I would have expected him to have been exposed by now, especially by major league pitching. Baker has stated he notices a different approach by Hairston at the plate. If we’re lucky, even at 31, he has maybe “clicked”. However, we cannot count on that and I agree. I also agree that Freel plays best when he plays about 80% of the time, rather than daily. However, in my proposal, you could split time between he and Hairston, especially since they are both versatile. I’m really not anti-EE, but he is a frustrating player to me and I’m not convinced he’ll ever be more than a good but not great, streaky, underachiever. I certainly could be wrong but I think he has now had ample time to show some consistency.

As for Arroyo, I get your points and agree that trading him would be a risk. However, I would do it for the right player. For me, that’s they key. However, I would probably wait and see how we do as far as catching up in the division. If we do, we’ll need him. If we don’t gain ground, i would look into packaging he and EE for a good player or prospect.
What do you like about Laroche? I looked at the Dodger page and he is ranked around 5th on their list, with DeWit ranked #2. He has started slowly in AAA. Can you give us a report on him as a player? I notice he has plus power but how is his defense, speed, etc.

Are there any other players you like out there? Perhaps a true leadoff-type hitter?

    Josh,
Not sure whats up there. It seems the Reds have been linked to everyone but Gordon Beckham. Which is actually quite strange as he fits their profile to a T. We will find out in a week.

    Aaron,
With LaRoche, the guy is a complete hitter. He may be off to a slightly ’slow start’ but his OBP is .462 right now in AAA with 33 walks and 9 strikeouts! That is absolutely insane. Thats likely the reason his batting numbers are the way they are….. he isn’t getting much to hit at all. He absolutely would be target #1 for me right now. Defensively he is slightly below average, but we are dealing with that now. Speed wise, he is average.

As for a leadoff type guy that I think had a chance at being moved…. I don’t really know any that came to mind right away.

Do you think there will have to be some massive reshuffling of the lineups in all the Reds Minor League Teams? Without Bruce and Phillips at Louisville, they are a paltry offensive team. There seems to be a glut of good outfielders in Chattanooga. Do you think this might be a fact of Jocketty not knowing the minor league system?

I think its just an issue of trying to get everyone at the right spot for them right now. I don’t know if we will see any more promotions for at least another month.

  13. I looked at the Louisville starting lineup today and Kevin Barker was the leading hitter. wow. i kind of pitty Rick Sweet. One day you pencil in Jay Bruce and Andy Phillips and the next day your best hitter is at .254. If it weren’t for Bailey/Maloney/Thompson that would be a boring team.

  14. About Bavasi, isn’t he the one that traded away Adam Jones, gave up Soriano for Ramirez, signed an aging Japanese catcher for way too much, and keeps Jeff Clement in AAA in favor of Jose Vidro? I guess I didnt realize how bad he really was. I was hoping the Reds could pry Adcock or Nick Hill from the Mariners, not top ten kind of guys but interesting players. Are those guys realistic?

  15. I like the BB/K ratio for Laroche and was not aware of it. Doug, what kind of package do you think would net somebody like Laroche?

  16. I just noticed that Juan Francisco took a walk last night. That’s encouraging. He’s had as many walks in one season as Jay Bruce has in two nights.
Even with the horrible BB/K ratio, you have to be impressed with a 20 year old hitting .305 in the FSL his first time around. Hopefully his defense is coming around.

  17. Kyle,
Thats the same Bavasi. Francisco’s bat is quite good, but his discipline is downright terrible. He needs to make dramatic steps or hit .330 to be productive in the majors.

    Aaron,
Honestly it would probably take a big haul to get him from them, but given that they have nowhere to play him I would find out exactly what they want and go from there.

  18. Doug,
Would you trade Adam Dunn to LA for Laroche and one of their better pitching or catching prospects?

  19. I would probably trade Dunn straight up for LaRoche. I just think he is going to be severely overpaid the next few years.

  20. Doug,
REALLY? You really think highly of Laroche. That says a lot.

Yes and no. I don’t think Dunn can bring in a ton of talent given his contract situation. LaRoche was a top 10 prospect in all of baseball last year and he is polished. It wasn’t based on his potential only, it was based on what he did on the field. I would trade 4 months of Adam Dunn for 6 years of Andy LaRoche without thinking twice because it just makes baseball sense.
