Today I thought I would take a look at Casey Kelly, who has risen up some draft boards and has been linked as high as #7 to our Reds. With the draft coming up on Thursday I wanted to make sure that I get his profile done just in case that is where the Reds go with their pick.

Information

Position Shortstop
Birthdate 10/4/89
Height 6?4?
Weight 190 lbs
Bats/Throws R/R

Scouting Report

Hitting Ability There are some questions with his bat. He has made improvements.
Power Has raw plus power.
Speed Well above average.
Arm Plus arm.
Fielding Plus defense.
Concerns Hitting is a concern for him. He also has a scholarship to play QB at Tennessee, which could lead to him falling in the draft or signing a deal well over slot to keep him off the football field.
Summary He has all of the athleticism in the world. As a shortstop he can play D, throw, has range…. on the pitchers mound he can hit the mid 90’s and also throws a plus breaking ball. At the plate he brings strong bat speed and raw power, but the question still remains. Will he hit at the next level? With a concern like that, I don’t think the Reds will end up taking him. I do think he will be taken before pick 15 though.

  1. I hope that the Reds dont draft Kelly this early. Drafting guys this early with questions about their bat usually dont pan out. I would love to see the Reds break slot for a guy like him in later rounds. Im tired of seeing the Yankees and Red Sox stealing guys like Middlebrooks and company because of signability.

  2. What are the questions about his ability to hit? I’m no scout, but that looks like a nice level swing, his weight seems even, and it seems like he has good bat speed. Does he not pick up pitches well?

  3. John,
Not sure what exactly it is. Its not his bat speed, but I have talked with several scouts who do bring it up as a concern.
