Its official now according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Good news all around. Wonder what the moves from Louisville and Dayton are that made these moves complete throughout the system.

  1. Good to see these moves, though I’d like to see Henry on his way to L’ville too. These players have got to be evaluated soon as to whether and when they can be part of the future in Cinti. Hope Dickerson to Cinti. and Valentin and CP to DFA follows quickly. I predict both Stubbs and Cumberland will do well at these levels and fairly quickly.

  2. Looking at Stubbs’ numbers, its doesnt look like he deserved the promotion. Is this a way to push him to see if he responds?

Gotta look deeper than the numbers with Stubbs. His walk rate was 2nd best in the FSL, he led the league in line drive rate and he cut his strikeouts down from last year by 2%. If he just continues to do what he has done this year he will be fine in AA.

  4. I know the FSL is notorious for eating hitters alive, could that have anything to do with his low BA? I know he wasn’t spectacular in Dayton last year, but maybe he’ll do better in AA. I can only hope so.

I really don’t hope they promote Dickerson; the guy inspires no confidence at all. He’s a K machine who’d hit .215 in the bigs, I think. But I do like the emergence of so many OF’s, a position that seemed then behind Bruce when the year started: Cumberland, Henry, Dorn, Stubbs, and Heisey all seem interesting, and meanwhile Frazier has started playing LF. Suddenly, some options, and K Jones and Justin Reed are interesting in Dayton (I even remain hopeful about Kainer and Perales in Sarasota). ——— And where did some of these fellas come from? The Kriv-dawg, drafting and trading.

I think its a little bit the league and a little bit of bad luck since May rolled around honestly. His batted ball data would suggest better numbers than he put up from May through now, so I figure he will hit alright in Chattanooga…. something like .265/.360/.430 ish… something like that.

  7. I really do think that Stubbs will benefit from seeing better pitching. He can be a solid .280/.380/.480 guy in AA right now I think, as long as he is healthy. Not to mention you have to like the 27 SB so far this year.

For me, Stubbs would be a much better prospect if he could get comfrortable in the leadoff spot. That would allow the Reds to take full advantage of his speed and on base skills and put less pressure on him to hit for power.

  9. Last year Stubbs had 142 K’s in 129 games , this year 82 in 86 so he is improving his contact rate. He will always be a 130-150 K a year guy but he can also be a 100 walk guy a year as well. His power not what where we want it right now but some college hitters take longer to get use to swinging wood bats. His power will develope as well and he does have 21 doubles so far this year along with 4 triples and 5 Hr’s. Stubbs can still develope into a .280 hitter at the big league level in my opinion. As he advances through the system he will also see better pitchers who will be around the plate more and we will see his average go up I think. it would also help if he gets more protection in the lineup. he has been hitting 5th most of the year and has not had anybody behind him to give him better looks in the batters box. I would bat him in front of both Dorn and Valaika now and see what happens.

  10. Stubbs
    Henry
    Valaika
    Dorn
    Eymann
    Gutierez

That would be my 1-6 for Chatt day in and day out.

  11. If Stubbs hits well the rest of the year in AA he will start 2009 at age 24 in AAA. That puts him on pace to make the majors before the age of 25. For a college kid that is fine. In fact next years AAA team could be stacked with Dorn, Valiaka, Stubbs, Cumberland and Henry all starting next year in AAA and all under the age of 25

  12. I am going to go out on a limb and say I think Stubbs future will be as a Curtis Granderson type bat at the major league level. Both guys K alot, have some power and Speed as well. I do think though Stubbs will walk more.

  13. It would sure be nice to see Stubbs post a good OBP while also leading off. if i remember that was supposedly a part of his bad K rate last year. I wonder where he will bat in AA.

  14. I have no clue I guess we might find out tonight……..I hope he is in lineup tonight anyway.

from BP today re Mesoraco… Thoughts?

Reverse Groundhog Day: 2007 first-round pick Devin Meseraco is hardly lighting up the stat sheet in his first full season, batting just .258/.313/.362 at Low-A Dayton. Of greater concern is that the scouts who have seen him this year see a far different player than last year’s amateur star in Pennsylvania. “It’s just remarkable how different he looks since last year as an amateur,” said one scout. “He’s got a soft middle and this puffy, stiff lower half and that’s pretty worrisome for me—he’s listed at 200 pounds, and I would say he’s a little more than that.” The extra weight has also led to some problems at the plate. “He had some of the best bat speed in the country last year and it’s just gone now—it’s slider bat speed,” continued the scout. “I did see some skills—a good pop time to second, some decent opposite fields power and quiet hands—but I just don’t see an everyday major league catcher in that body. It’s just not at all what I expected to see.”

  16. It is a bit of a concern. It sounds like he may have a nutritional issue going on, leading to a change in his body, which would effect his swing mechanics. That could cause an issue in the bat speed. The main thing a lot of guys take out of their first full season of pro baseball is to learn how to deal with their body over the course of a baseball season. I would like to see how he is looking next year honestly.

It’s funny, I was actually thinking that Mesoraco’s first year was going just fine–holding his own as the youngest kid on the team (until Lotzkar and Soto were promoted). The scout’s comments worry you though, and I’m not too confident in the notion that he just needs to learn to take care of his nutrition and body. 20 year olds–especially 20 year olds who are supposedly elite athletes–can eat nothing but Jolt and beef jerky and still be quick as lightning. But evidently Mesoraco’s not.

I just don’t see what they are talking about, if anything he looks stronger and more athletic

  19. He looks like how a catcher should look, stocky.

  20. With the promotion of Stubbs. Does this mean we are getting for a team that is minus Dunn and Griffey next yr or even at the deadline? The timing sort of suggest this.

  21. I really hope Cumberland can show hes could be a part of this team next year for sure. I would kill to know what a half way decent defense looks like.

  22. I still think that the Reds should sign a stop gap centerfielder to allow Cumberland/Henry/Stubbs develop. That centerfielder could be pawned at the trade deadline like Randa was if one of the AAA outfielders pushes him.

What a debut for Stubbs. 3-4 so far with a double and a SB.
