A quick look at Edinson Volquez from 2007 (Part 2)

March 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Yesterday I took a quick look at just the types of pitches, velocity and movement Volquez got with his pitches. Today I wanted to take a look at Volquez when the baseball was put in play against him. Before I we get to the chart, I want to explain it a little bit. The strikezone is just an ‘average’ strikezone. Obviously a strikezone for say, Ryan Freel and Adam Dunn would be different sizes, but I just used the average zone based on the 500 or so pitches Volquez threw last year. All hits are represented in a solid color on the graph, while all outs are just lined. Alright, onto the chart.

Volquez seems to have been hit harder in the middle and bottom of the zone than when he had the ball up in the zone. There are 103 balls in play on the chart and 57 of them came on fastballs, while 29 came on changeups and 17 came on curveballs. Overall there were 36 hits of the 103 balls in play (.350 BABIP, but that doesn’t count several pitches where the data was not recorded. His actual BABIP on the season was .310.) listed on the chart.
