Just got the data for todays game versus the Diamondbacks from MLB.com and it looks like the person operating the Pitch F/X machine at GABP was not paying attention for most of the game. The operator missed about 100 pitches in the system. Oh well, nothing we can do about it now.
Some new things in this years Pitch F/X system that I noticed though:
- Sv_Id - Looks like the id number for the operator as it is missing on every pitch missing data.
- Pitch_Type -Looks like they added a pitch description to each pitch as well. Can’t say how accurate it is yet as there isn’t enough data to figure it out yet (at least for me doing just the Reds). I am sure someone that does all of baseball with have better answers soon enough.
- Type_Confidence - Not sure what this is either, but I am sure someone smarter than myself will figure it out soon enough.
In the morning I will have up charts for all of the Reds pitchers (note that there will be data missing for about 40 pitches for Aaron Harang and 4 pitches for Francisco Cordero).

Josh Kalk has an article this morning mentioning pitch types and confidence levels. Apparently the confidence level is on a 0 to 1 scale, with 1 being highly confident.

Ken,
Thanks for the link. I asked Josh about it last night over on his blog, he still isn’t sure exactly how its being measured though. Sounds like something we are going to have to wait and see with.
