Johnny Cueto’s MLB Debut

April 4th, 2008 · 3 Comments

7 innings pitched, 1 hit (HR to Justin Upton), 0 walks and 10 strikeouts. Thats incredible. So much for the Reds not being able to produce starting pitching from its system…..

While I believe there may have been something going on with the pitch f/x system in terms of the movement in Cueto’s pitches that I want to look more into before posting, I did go ahead and plot his pitches versus the strikezone.

Despite what you may read or what you and I saw at the game today, Cueto didn’t top 94 MPH today. Not bad still.  He was in the zone a lot today as he usually is. Like I noted above, the pitch f/x data is looking a little strange in terms of the movement to me right now. I am trying to figure out if Cueto is getting different movement than most pitchers in baseball on his fastball or if the movement appears off to others. I will see if I can get some help on that one. Over his next few starts it will also give us a better answer as to if thats true or not, but hopefully someone can help me out with one in the meantime.

I have been waiting for your update to see what you had to say about how the park registered his movement since I thought it was really odd too… Pitch F/X seemed to have his fastball as a Rivera cutter on steroids and most devastating slider of all time.

Yeah Ryan…. something just didn’t look right once I plotted the movement of his pitches so I sent out a few emails to guys who have a better understanding of the pitch f/x system than myself in the hopes of getting some type of answer that isn’t ‘wait until his next start to see how they match up’. Hopefully someone has something for me tomorrow.

Got some word on some possible corrections. I am going to make a new post on it now.
