Josh Fogg makes his Reds debut and Jared Burton has a real nice game

April 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Josh Fogg was brought in from the Rockies last year and made his Reds debut tonight. It was not a very good start. He went 4 innings, allowed 6 earned runs on 5 hits (2HR), 3 walks and he struck out 3.  He threw 47 strikes and 36 balls, not exactly the best ratio. Below is his pitches plotted versus the strikezone.

As you can see, he was not in the zone much, and when he was, guys weren’t missing the ball.  The Phillies have quite a few strong hitting lefties (including Jimmy Rollins when Fogg was on the mound), so the amount of pitches missing wide left isn’t a surprise…. you don’t want to try to throw inside to good lefties.

Unlike Fogg, Jared Burton had a very strong game. Burton went 2 perfect innings and struck out 4 batters. 4 Strikeouts and 2 full innings took all of 22 pitches and they are shown below.

Interesting with the set of called strikes right above the two balls that look to be just inches apart but got two different calls. Hopefully Burton can have a lot of outings like this all year. His main problem last year was control and walking too many batters. Tonight he didn’t have that issue so much.
