Edinson Volquez Reds debut

April 7th, 2008 · No Comments

I still think that something is up with the Reds pitch f/x camera. The movement on the pitches still seems a bit off and the speeds don’t match up with the radar gun or with players past history velocities.  It should be noted that the Reds were looking for a Pitch F/X operator as late as March 30th on Craig’s list. Perhaps an inexperienced operator is causing something strange to occur.  Due to that, I am just going to do the strikezone type plots for pitchers until more data is available to see if there needs to be a correction made. The Reds go on the road after today, so we will know soon enough, but I am about 95% sure some type of correction needs to be made.

Here is what Volquez did in his Reds debut against the Phillies as he struck out 8 batters in 5.1 innings.

Against the Phillies left laden lineup it looks like he was trying to pound the lower corner of the plate. He wasn’t throwing a ton on the left half of the plate. Most of his ‘in play’ balls were up in the zone. All of his swinging strikes were down in the zone.
