One of the complains about Corey Patterson when he was brought in was that he has poor on base skills. Generally guys with poor on base skills fail to understand the strikezone and are free swingers. There have been 10 games played thus far in the season so I wanted to take a quick look at Corey Patterson’s strikezone judgment.

By looking at the chart, he doesn’t seem to be expanding the zone too often. Even more impressive is that in 74 swings, he has missed just 4 times (Red X’s on the chart). He also seems to be able to hit the ball all over the zone. Inside, outside, middle, top and bottom of the zone all seem to be covered for him. While its early and he only has 2 walks in 39 plate appearances, he also only has 2 strikeouts. I still don’t like the idea of him batting leadoff, but he is going to put the ball in play a lot if he continues what he has been doing. I doubt the walks go up though as long as he keep making as much contact as he is though.

Interesting, that’s a nice look at his performance so far. I suspect he’s still chasing the high heat at the top of the zone.

Yeah, as more data comes in we will really get a good idea of how guys are approaching things. Still pretty early, especially for a guy like Patterson who isn’t starting every day.
