Breaking down Brandon Phillips (part 1)

April 28th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I wanted to look at what Phillips was doing at the plate and maybe pick up why Phillips had been struggling so much this year. The first pitch I looked at was the slider and well, the results were a bit surprising to me. Here is the chart of what Phillips has done versus the slider this year.

Of the 53 pitches that went down in the books as strikes, Phillips only had 3 hits against them. He also appears very vulnerable to the slider down and away. As an opposing pitcher, I would just continue to pound the bottom right corner of the strikezone with sliders against Phillips until he showed he had some more patience against them.

Tomorrow I want to look at change ups and curveballs that Phillips faced and Wednesday I want to look at what he does against fastballs.

I really think Dusty’s approach of hitters need to hit, not walk approach is hurting the team a lot.

An example is Hatty saying Dusty wants him swinging at the 1st pitch, while Hatty’s telling the media thats not his style

Or Votto only have 1 BB after showing solid BB rates in the minors.

BP is not a #4 hitter because of his very low BB rates, high K rates, and high GIDP rates. He’s causing Dunn to get up with zero MOB way too often.

By Dusty telling BP he’s a future #3 hitter, and by encouraging him to swing and hack away is bad for his development. He’s been horrible this year. His K and FB rate has gone up by 4%.

    I don’t like what I’m seeing. He’s basically Jeff Fancoure and I don’t think that’s a good thing.

Dusty is killing me with this team. I don’t think he has done much to Phillips at the plate, he has always been a swing first ask questions later type of hitter…. its what Votto has going on that is a bit worrisome.

As for him thinking Phillips is a 3/4 hitter…. well, yeah, he is. Only because Dusty bats him there. There is no reason for him to be hitting there though.
