Breaking down Brandon Phillips (part 2)

April 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today I wanted to look at what Brandon Phillips did against both the curveball and the changeup. First lets take a look at what Phillips did versus the curveball.

Not a ton of balls in play against the curveball for Phillips. He has only put 7 balls in play (of 20 swings) and only had 2 hits.

Lets take a look at what he did versus the change up.

Phillips seemed to hit the ball well when he made contact with the changeup, getting a single, two doubles and a HR on 8 balls in play.  The interesting part is that he didn’t have a single called strike on him against them. However he did seem to chase them out of the zone when they were low, swinging and missing on 6 below the strikezone.

So far to me it seems that Phillips has had problems to this point in the season with breaking pitches. Tomorrow I will look at what he did with fastballs and maybe get a better idea if he hits the ’straight’ type pitches better.

Off topic, but I was looking at Cueto’s home starts.

It’s appears his release point has shifted to the left from start 1 to 2. Then the release has shifted up from start 2 to 3. So now his release point is at a totally different location. Will Carrol picked up on this awhile ago, but finally said today that he think it’s possibly an indication of an injury forming.

That new system Justin mentioned is really nice, but the problem is the data range changes depending on the start so it’s hard to compare speeds.

Also because GABP is off, only home starts are useful to look at for real comparisons.

Cueto’s break, both hor and vert have changed after his 1st start. It’s hard to tell whether that 1st start was just some outlier, or if he is actually changing his mechanics.
