Daytona Tortugas coaching staff announced for 2019 Doug Gray January 9, 2019 The Daytona Tortugas are the last of the Cincinnati Reds full-season affiliates to unveil their 2019 coaching staff, but it’s now available for consumption. Most of the staff looks the same as it was last year. Ricky Gutierrez will return as the Tortugas manager. It will be his second season as the manager in Daytona, where he served in 2017 as the bench coach. He helped lead the Tortugas to the Florida State League Championship Series in 2018. In his playing career he spent 12 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Padres, Astros, Cubs, Indians, Mets, and Red Sox where he racked up over 4000 plate appearances. Pitching coach Tom Brown will also return to the Advanced-A Reds affiliate in Daytona. This will be his fourth consecutive season as the Tortugas pitching coach. It’s his 13th year in the Reds organization, having previously served as the pitching coach at several levels, including the rehab coach in Goodyear for two years. He’s been a pitching coach in the minor leagues since 1981 when he served in the role for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. He pitched in one season in the Major Leagues with the Seattle Mariners. Alex Pelaez is also returning to Daytona as the hitting coach. It’s his 11th year in the Reds organization and his third straight season as the Tortugas hitting coach. Prior to that he spent three years as the hitting coach for the Double-A team in Pensacola. He was also the hitting coach for the Dayton Dragons, Billings Mustangs and Gulf Coast League Reds. In his playing career he reached the Major Leagues with the San Diego Padres in 2002. The Tortugas will have a new bench coach in 2019. Lenny Harris will take over the role for Daytona. He served in the same role last season for Pensacola, and the year before that with the Arizona League Reds. Prior to joining the Reds, Harris was on the Miami Marlins staff, both in the Major and Minor Leagues. In his playing career he spent 18 seasons in the Major Leagues from 1988-2005. He played for the Reds, Dodgers, Mets, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Brewers, Cubs, and Marlins. Trey Strickland will take over as the strength and conditioning coach. He previously served in that role with the Dayton Dragons and Billings Mustangs. He was also the assistant strength and conditioning coach with the Reds in 2015. Ryan Ross will be the teams athletic trainer. He was the athletic trainer for the Greeneville Reds in 2018.
