MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that right-handed pitcher Odrisamer Despaigne has opted out of his contract with the Cincinnati Reds. The 32-year-old was in spring training with the big league club, but was sent to the minor leagues before camp was over. He made 8 starts with the Triple-A Louisville Bats before today, and he pitched relatively well. He posted a 3.92 ERA in 41.1 innings pitched. That came along with 40 hits allowed, 5 home runs, just 16 walks, and he struck out 40 batters along the way.

With the Major League Baseball being used in Triple-A, for many pitchers it’s been a tough adjustment. In the International League there’s only one team with an ERA under 4.37 – the Syracuse Mets. The league ERA is 4.85. That’s up over a half of a run from 2018. It’s even worse in the Pacific Coast League for some teams. Three teams have an ERA between 3.96 and 4.15. But six teams also have ERA’s over 5.89, with the league sitting at 5.27.

With so many pitchers struggling at the Triple-A level to keep runs off of the board, a guy with plenty of Major League experience like Odrisamer Despaigne having some success at the level should have some opportunities available to him in another organization. And maybe somewhere else he’ll have a better chance to crack the big league roster than in Cincinnati, where the pitching has been outstanding in 2019. Who will take his roster spot for Louisville, and his spot in the rotation, has not yet been announced.

Other roster moves

The Cincinnati Reds did make several roster moves in the last two days.

  • Cory Thompson (RHP) promoted from Daytona to Chattanooga.
  • Victor Payano (LHP) placed on the injured list with a stress fracture in his right fibula (EWWWW).
  • Brian Rey (2B) promoted to Dayton from extended spring training.
  • Zeek White (OF) promoted to Dayton from extended spring training.
  • Bren Spillane (1B/OF) from Dayton to extended spring training.
  • Jonathan Willems (2B) from Dayton to extended spring training.

Interesting to see how White does at Dayton. Need some excitement there.

Pretty crowded outfield there already with guys I imagine they want to get a lot of time.

Kind of surprised Willems and Spillane demoted. They do not have a real first baseman.

Antone has the best stats for the Lookouts. Whether than means anything is the question.

Tejay is on the 7day IL. I doubt h’e promoted until after he returns to active duty for the Lookouts.

I get the impression the Reds are making more moves than usual in the minors than before, especially this early. Perhaps the change of the people in charge?
