The Dayton Dragons are the first team in the Cincinnati Reds farm system to announce their coaching staff for the 2020 season. The entire staff will be new faces to Dayton.

Taking over as the manager will be Gookie Dawkins. He has been with the Reds organization for the last five seasons. The last two years saw Dawkins manage the Greeneville Reds. Prior to that he was the hitting coach for Double-A Pensacola (2017), Advanced-A Daytona (2016), and the AZL Reds (2015). As a player he saw action in four different seasons in the Major Leagues – playing for both the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals.

Brian Garman has been named the pitching coach for the Dragons. We found out this news the other day when he announced it on twitter. This will be the first year for Garman in the organization. He had been the pitching coach for the last two seasons in Orem and Inland Empire within the Los Angeles Angels organization. As a player he pitched for four seasons in the minor leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers. He attended the University of Cincinnati, and is from Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Hernan Iribarren is moving up in his second year of coaching. He’ll join the Dragons staff as the bench coach. In 2019 he began the year with the Louisville Bats as a player – though he spent the first half of the season on the injured list. He officially retired around the mid-season mark and became the bench coach with the Billings Mustangs when their season began. As a player he saw action in three different seasons in the Major Leagues for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds (2016).

Darryl Brinkley will come on board as the Dayton Dragons hitting coach. It’s going to be his 5th year in the organization. He will be working with many of the players he was with last season, where he served as the Billings Mustangs hitting coach. Prior to that he worked as the hitting coach in Greeneville (2018) and was the Louisville Bats bench coach the year before that. He also served as the hitting coach for the 2016 Dominican Summer League Reds.

Previous manager Luis Bolivar, pitching coach Seth Etherton, and bench coach Kevin Mahar are all remaining in the organization. Their assignments have not yet been announced.

So glad to see Hernan Iribarren staying in the organization. I would bet he has a long coaching career.
Gookie moves up to Dayton. Hopefully a better year is in store for Dayton.
BTW, Seth Etherton was named pitching coach at AA Chattanooga.

Am I just mis-remembering, or is this earlier than we have seen these staffs completed than in past years?
